Forestieri salutes Maradona: 'He is eternal for me'

'We all wanted to be like him as kids.' Fernando Forestieri said about Diego Armando Maradona after dedicating his goal to him.

The Argentinian attacking midfielder had scored only one goal in Serie A in 2008 for Siena after being brought on as a substitute against Inter in a 3–2 loss.

The 30-year-old yelled:

"Vamos Diego" ("Come on Diego")

, after finding the net against Lazio at the Olimpico on Sunday.

“It’s an immense joy, it was long time I didn’t play in

Serie A

and I worked a lot with my teammates,” Foresteri said after the game.

“We won against a strong team. When I scored, I almost cried because Diego was the best one ever. He is eternal for me.

“When we were kids, we all wanted to be Diego. I don’t know where he is now, but I want to send him a kiss, this win is for him.

“We have to run and help each other,” he continued.

“When we play as a team, the talent of single footballers emerge. I am so happy for the win, we’ve worked so much. Not only those who played today, everyone.

“We always train well, this win is for everybody who work at the club.

“It’s the first time I play up front. I used to play as a midfielder before, I am available for the team, if the coach wants me to play, I hope I can help the team. That’s the most important thing.”

Luca Gotti didn't make a trip with the squad to Rome and the club's sporting director Pierpaolo Marino said before the game there has been a COVID-19 flare-up this week.

“He should always remain at home,” Forestieri said laughing.

“We hadn’t won here for long time, we worked for this. It’s an important step, we need to keep this up. We have great players in midfield, in goal, if we would be more ruthless in front of goal, we could do something great.

“Today’s match was very beautiful, also for Diego, now we focus on one game at time.
