After missing Havertz due to fitness complications, Chelsea’s coach Lampard decided to make little alternations in the squad by placing Kovacic next to Mount.
Since spending £200million on signing new players, it has been difficult for,Chelsea
’s coach, Frank Lampard to decide on his squad without excluding some of the footballers. Therefore no one could tell how the Blues coach will deal with this year’s campaign considering the number of players, the injuries, and their lack of pre-season preparations. But Lampard who started the season in 4-2-3-1 formation due to the club misfortunes revealed the solution he reached following their win overBurnley
“It is very normal when you miss pre-season and you are looking for those tweaks in formation at the start of the season. Now, we are playing in a slightly different way and there have been a number of positives.”
The new formation for Lampard has been 4-3-3 withN’Golo Kante
as the anchoring midfielder. This change has led them to win all of their three recent matches since adapting it to the team.
“I liked the balance of the midfield,” Lampard said. “N’Golo Kante was fantastic behindMason [Mount]
and there was a fluidity about it where they drop out and get on the ball in deeper areas and provide others. There was a lot of energy in that midfield as well as quality.”
During their victory over Burnley Lampard included Kante with Mount and Havertz on his two sides.
“It is great to see what it did for Kai and Mason in bringing those attributes from what we regard as really offensive players but they also have the energy and desire to cover ground to help the team,” he added.
“They then pick the ball up and can be dangerous when they arrive high [up the pitch], they are both things that Kai and Mason have. Again, it is through the balance of the team and working on that but I am really impressed with the humility of those two to do both sides of the number eight role.”
“That’s what I want from the players that play when it is two number eights. I want them to help build offensively, join, help build, make assists and get goals. They both did it today.”
Still on their recent match Lampard did not go by his early season plan after losing Havertz to fitness recovery and instead he decided to startMateo Kovacic
next to Mount. Though the player is not an attacking midfielder Kovacic did succeed in more than 94% of his passes creating three chances while also completing 100% of his dribbles.
