Sun 22 November 2020 | 11:06

Scott Parker has explained why Alphonse Areola is his first pick goalkeeper and concludes he will be fundamental in evading relegation from the Premier League.

The 27-year-old moved to

Fulham

on a one-year loan just before the opening match of the season. Marek Rodak began in goal against Arsenal however Areola has played each

Premier League

fixture ever since.

The French international ceded seven goals in his initial two games, however, he has been an essential member in refining their defense that has begun to challenge Cottagers' opponents.

Parker said:

Alphonse

is going to be vitally important, he has been important for us since he came in.

I’m fortunate enough to have two or three very experienced and exceptional keepers but Alphonse, at the moment, has the No.1.

“In the last game he played very well.

“Since he settled in now and is getting to grips with the speed of the Premier League, he has been big for us.

“When you’re a team like us this year with the challenges we’re going to be facing, your keeper is going to need to stand up and have some unbelievable performances.

“No doubt he will do that for us and be vital.

“It’s big for us to have a player with the experience he has in terms of being around the top ilk of clubs in big competitions.

“He brings that experience which will help us and help the players who do not have it.

“They can take things from him and that’ll be vitally important.”
