The president of Basque Football Federation has clarified that there is no agreement with government over participating in international competitions.
In an interview that was published last Thursday, Luis Mari Elustondo surprised UEFA and FIFA officials by talking about agreements over the Basque National team’s participation in international matches. Elustondo however has clarified his former comment in a new interview with El Partidazo de COPE in quotes carried by Marca.
“There is no pre-agreement with the government for the Basque Country to participate in international tournaments,” he said. “I have expressed myself badly and I regret it. We don’t have an agreement with the government.”
After his former interview, UEFA and FIFA officials expressed their surprise over Elustondo’s comments and insisted that no government has the power to decide which teams can participate in international competitions. The Basque national team played their first match under the name of ‘North Federation’ in 1915 against Catalonia which finished in a 6-1 defeat. In recent years the team has had two key players in Xabi Prito and Aritz Aduriz who play forReal Sociedad
