Alessandro Florenzi

does not believe that he is wearing the captain’s armband for

Italy

. Four years ago after his injury, he thought that he would never be able to play football again and now he is coming back as the captain.

Florenzi was chosen as the captain, as he had the most caps in the makeshift starting XI that won against

Poland

on Sunday.

“It was a special night for me, like coming full circle,” he said.

“In this very stadium four years ago, I thought after that injury I’d never play football again, and yet I walked out here wearing the captain’s armband for Italy.”

Despite more than 20 players were not able to attend the game either because of injury or COVID-19, they beat Poland.

Even coach

Roberto Mancini

watched the game from home, as he was tested positive for Coronavirus and was in quarantine.

“It was a tough match for all of us, but the staff and the players came together during difficult moments,” continued Florenzi.

“There is great trust between us. We have fantastic players who are always ready when called upon and this Italy side deserves a round of applause tonight.”

Italy is now at the top of the Nations League group with nine points.

Netherlands

and

Poland

are the second and third with eight and seven points respectively.

Their final game is against

Bosnia-Herzegovina

on Wednesday.
