Roy Keane said about the Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero that he gained weight after he returned from his knee injury the previous month.

His first display was of the season in City’s 1-0 win against Arsenal on October 17. He did score his first goal against Porto in Champions League. Three days later, he was forced off in his play against West Ham for his hamstring injury.

He restated his full training this week but he did not appeared physically fit to encounter Liverpool on the next Sunday.

Kean said:  “My issue with Aguero when he came back was he looked overweight. God knows what size shorts he was wearing but he looked really heavy.”

“But I was really worried when he came back as he looked really, really heavy.”

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards defended Aguero, stating that actually considered the importance of the competitions for his coming back.

In response, Richards said: “I think that is because he has been rushed back. Everyone is always asking, ‘Where is Aguero? Let’s get him back’.

“Sometimes when you are needed so much, you are not even fully fit, you’re being rushed back and you’re being judged out on the pitch. You know you are not really up to speed but you’ve got to do it for the team.”

Keane had little sympathy for Aguero, however, adding: “It’s difficult to get up to speed but don’t be piling on the pounds.”
