Ronaldo is Mbappe's idol but it's too soon to compare them - Deschamps

Sun 11 October 2020 | 1:21

Ahead of France's Nations League match against Portugal, Didier Deschamps insisted Kylian Mbappe vs Cristiano Ronaldo comparison is not valid.

Cristiano Ronaldo

is the soccer hero for Kylian Mbappe, yet it is far too premature to equate them, says Didier Deschamps, France's manager.

On Sunday, Les Bleus host

for a match in the Nations League, with both teams taking six points from two matches up until now.

Furthermore, the Frenchman is set to take on a Portuguese striker, a five-time winner of the Ballon d'Or and a five-time winner of the Champions League who has won league trophies in

, and

Mbappe, like Ronaldo, experienced a quick rise to international fame as a teen and is now a

World Cup

winner at the age of 21.

However, the 14-year difference in ages makes comparisons between them complicated, Deschamps states.

"Ronaldo was his hero. Yet I think Cristiano was, and is, the hero of many young footballers," Deschamps stated in a press conference.

"It's hard to compare them. Cristiano has been playing at the highest level for over fifteen years. They're not from the same generation."

" At the point when

is as old as Cristiano is today, I guess it's easier to make a direct comparison.

"They're two stars who can at any point be crucial for their side. It's Cristiano's ability, and even though he's younger but it's also one of Kylian's. They're both world-class players."

Two years after his side was defeated 1-0 against Portugal in the final of their home European Championship, Deschamps directed

to success in Russia in 2018. however, the Frenchman said nothing can be learned from that match.

"It's been a couple of years ago and there's nothing we can do, so there's no point in worrying about it, "he continued."

"It's all right to dream about great times, but that's not the situation. Congratulations to them, 4 years ago they won the European trophy. It was a valuable experience for us as well.

" We know what was happening. We will encounter them once more tomorrow. Yet there aren't too many players of the current squad from that team, I guess six footballers."

"It's going to be a fantastic match between two dominant European sides. It's going to be a chance to test our abilities, since next month in Portugal and even in June, we're going to face them once more as expected."
