Called “the group of death,” group D of AFCON 2019 is probably the toughest one among the eight groups. Three teams, Morocco, South Africa and Ivory Coast, have the potential to make it to the round of 16 and soon two of them (Ivory Coast and South Africa)will face each other.
The teams’ only previous encounter in the Africa Cup of Nations was in 1998 where the game ended 1-1 in the group stages, with both teams going through to the knockout stages.
This is Ivory Coast’s 23rd AFCON participation. It’s good to know that they’ve made it to the knockout stages in six of their last seven tournaments. The team have lost only one of their last 17 AFCON group games which was against Morocco in 2017. In fact, their last defeat in an opening match was in 1996 against Ghana where they lost 0-2.
South Africa on the other hand are the last team to win the Africa Cup of Nations on their debut in 1996. They have failed to make it out of the group stages in four of their last five AFCON appearances. As a matter of fact they’ve won only one of their last 15 games in the competition; the match was against Angola on home soil in January 2013 where they beat Angola 2-0.
The match will be held at Al Salam Stadium on 24 Jun at 19:30PM.
