Puyol on turning down Barcelona sporting director job

Carles Puyol has been talking about why he decided to turn down the offer of becoming Barcelona’s new sporting director.

Legendary former Barcelona defender, Carles Puyol, was expected to return to Barca this year and replace Pep Segura but later announced that he had decided not to accept the offer.

In a statement on Twitter, the 41-year-old said he would not be taking up an administrative role with the Catalan giants.

"In recent weeks, several news stories about my possible incorporation at FC Barcelona as a sports director have been published. As such, I feel obligated to communicate to the whole Cule family that, after weighing it up a lot, I have decided not to accept the club's offer,” he twitted.

"It has not been an easy decision since I have always said that I would like to return to what I consider my home.”

"But various personal projects in which I am immersed would prevent me, at this time, from giving the exclusive dedication that the position deserves. I would like to thank the club for the trust placed in me by offering me this position of so much responsibility."

Puyol retired from playing in 2014 and became assistant to ex-sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta before leaving the post in January 2015.

That experience, coupled with his legendary status at Barcelona, would have been useful to Puyol if he had accepted the vacant position.

He has recently expanded on his decision and also offered his thoughts on Victor Valdes’ sacking as Juvenil A boss.

“I’m at a vital moment, developing projects. One will come out soon and it’s with Danone, related to football and values. It’s an online program for parents who want to spend time with their kids. This is one of the projects that saw me reject the proposal because I’m excited about them.”

“Victor has a lot to teach the kids. I don’t know the reasons for his exit but I’m sure he’ll be a great coach. It’s not easy to be a coach at the youth level because people only look at results. What’s important is the formation of the player both on the pitch and emotionally.”

Valdes was sacked at the start of October after just a couple of months in the job after reportedly clashing with Patrick Kluivert and has been replaced by Franc Artiga.

Puyol spent his entire career at Barcelona, playing for the first team for 15 years. He won six La Liga titles, the UEFA Champions League three times, and is regarded as one of the best captains the club has ever had.

Some reported that he didn’t accept the vacant position because of the club's transfer policy over the summer.
