Millwall beats Nottingham Forest 3-0 with Smith's hat trick

Fri 06 March 2020 | 21:42

Beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 in a one-sided away match at City Ground, Millwall reduced Notthingham Forest's chances of participating in the promotion challenge.

With the three goals Matt Smith netted on Friday at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest were stunned with their chances to take part in the promotion challenge reduced.

If Nottingham Forest had won, they would have been level on points with third-place Fulham and only five points behind Leeds United in the automatic promotion place, but they were surprisingly beaten at home by the three goals Smith scored in 20, 26, and 33 minutes. With this win, Millwall is only two points away from the play-offs.

Smith's clever header from Murray Wallace's cross put the visitors ahead after 20 minutes, and he was credited with a second when he deflected Jayson Molumby's effort beyond goalkeeper Brice Samba.

The striker scored his third goal by nodding in Shane Ferguson's corner, leaving Forest to think more about their form giving them just two wins in eight league matches.
