UEFA Nations League new format + latest news on 2020-21 draw
Defending Nations League champion, Portugal will face France, Croatia, and Sweden in League A Group 3.
There have been several changes from the previous Nations League (2018-19), which Portugal won last summer: This time instead of three, there will be four teams in each group in the top three divisions, and It does not offer any guaranteed 2022 World Cup places, whereas the previous version provided four Euro 2020 spots.
UEFA have actually increased the size of the top three tiers to 16 countries - meaning each group will have four teams - and decreased the size of the bottom tier to seven. None of the 12 countries relegated will actually have to drop divisions.
The teams who win each group in the top division will go into the finals tournament in June 2021. The teams who finish bottom will be relegated to League B. Any team that finishes top of their group in Leagues B, C or D will be promoted. The teams who finish bottom of League B groups will be relegated, while there will be a play-off to decide which League C bottom teams are relegated because League D only has two groups.
Unlike Nations League 2018-19, only two World Cup play-off spots will be available for any of the 55 countries. Nations League group winners who do not qualify for the World Cup or play-offs through normal qualifying will go into the 12-team World Cup play-offs in March 2022.
UEFA will confirm the Nations League fixtures and kick-off times in the coming weeks however the scheduled match weeks are in September, October and November 2020. The Finals will take place in June 2021 with the location and venues to be confirmed by UEFA.
The competition will commence in early September, with the Finals set for June 2021.
For this season's draw, England’s Gareth Southgate and France’s Didier Deschamps were also among the coaches present in the ceremony, although there have been growing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, with the Netherlands among the many European countries to have reported cases.
Nations League 2020-21 draw
The repeat of World Cup 2018 final: France and Croatia will meet again in the same group in the 2020-21 Nations League, with two other teams, namely Sweden and the defending champion Portugal, while Germany and Spain will go head-to-head in another group.
Portugal who beat Netherlands 1-0 under Fernando Santos in the final with Goncalo Guedes' goal, will be this time tested against Sweden, Croatia, and France in Group 3.
In Group 4, Germany and Spain will be the favorites ahead of Ukraine and Switzerland, while England and Belgium are in Group 2 with Iceland and Denmark.
Italy who are in the same group with Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Netherlands, have a better chance of leading their group, with only Netherlands to challenge them.
England are in the top tier, with Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the second of four divisions.
