Thu 09 June 2022 | 4:30

Atalanta may not be as big a team as AC Milan, Juventus or Inter Milan, but they have been competing in Serie A since 2010-11 season. In their history they have had some promotions and relegations to Serie A and back. Anyway, in this post, we are to see who the best Atalanta players of all time are.

Before anything else we should say that great players such as Meazza, Antonio Cabrini, Filippo Inzaghi, and Christian Vieri played sometime during their careers for Atalanta but since it was for a brief period they are not included on the list of best Atalanta players of all time.

We should also mention that some of Atalanta all-time top scorers like Cristiano Doni, Papu Gomez, and Adriano Bassetto are also on the list of best Atalanta players of all time. And also there is the question who

Atalanta best players in 2022

or even Serie A best players in 2022 are.

For Atalanta best players in 2022, the answer is Merih Demiral, Ruslan Malinovskyi, and Remo Freuler, and for Serie A best players in 2022, there are a number of players we can call as Serie A best players in 2022 with some of them being Ciro Immobile, Dusan Vlahovic, and Paulo Dybala, because actually your choice of best players is not limited to a team. Anyhow, as you see, none of Atalanta best players in 2022 are either among

Serie A best players in 2022

or best Atalanta players of all time, however, that doesn’t mean they are inferior in playstyle or anything else, but that they should have time to prove themselves and maybe they would finish among best Atalanta players of all time one day.

A List of Best Atalanta Players of All Time

Here comes a list of best Atalanta players of all time starting with the retired goalkeeper, Fabrizio Ferron, but let’s see which other footballers are on the list.

Fabrizio Ferron

The only goalkeeper on the list of

best Atalanta players of all time

, Fabrizio Ferron is a 56-year-old retired Italian goalkeeper who served six Italian clubs during his career including Atalanta whom he actually served the most: Actually for 8 years between 1988 and 1996 which almost comprises half of his 18-year career starting from 1986 and ending in 2004. Ferron made a total of 253 appearances for Atalanta during the period mentioned above and won a

Serie B

title with them in 1994-95 season. In rest of the seasons that he served the Italian club, they actually competed in Serie A, but didn’t win a trophy except for Coppa Itlian silver medal in 1995-96 season. From among all the 517 appearances that Ferron made at league level, 300 took place in Serie A. In fact, he was considered as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in Serie A during 1990s who possessed good shot-stopping abilities, athleticism, strong positional sense, and a composed style of goalkeeping capable of also making acrobatic saves through his top reflexes.

Papu Gomez

Among Atalanta all-time top scorers - he’s currently Atalanta’s 5th top scorer of all time, Papu Gomez is a 34-year-old still-active Argentinian footballer who’s been serving the Spanish club, Sevilla, since 2021, however, the club he served the most during his career was Atalanta whom he served for 7 years between 2014 and 2021 scoring 59 goals in his 252 appearances for them across all competitions. This is as Gomez has played for the other clubs he has served to this date at most for three years with a lower goalscoring ratio. Being a midfielder, Gomez has also done well in providing assists setting the record for most assists in a single Serie A season in 2019-20 season with 15 assists and becoming the same league top assist provider in 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. He was also named Serie A best midfielder and on Serie A Team of the Year in 2019-20 season.

Although Gomez didn’t win any club trophies with Atalanta during his service to them, of course, like other clubs he has served except for

Arsenal de Sarandi

with whom he won two club trophies, he earned all his individual honors mentioned above with Atalanata. The 34-year-old Argentinian midfielder is actually a versatile player who can also play as a winger or forward and can shoot with both his feet, though he’s more comfortable with his right foot. He’s also an accurate free kick and penalty taker and often takes the penalties his team wins plus that he’s also known for his leadership qualities. In Serie A 2018-19 season when actually Gomez captained Atalanta, the Italian team managed to finish third at the end of the season getting legitimatized to compete in 2019–20 UEFA Champions League.

Cristiano Doni

Also on the list of

Atalanta all-time top scorers

and, in fact, the one who tops the list with a big margin of 33 goals with the second place on the list occupied by Duvan Zapata, Cristiano Doni is a 49-year-old retired Italian midfielder who served Atalanta more than any other club during his career; actually for 10 years and in two time periods which spanned from 1998 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2011. In both these time periods, although a midfielder, Doni earned a good goalscoring ratio, of course, concerning his role as a midfielder: Almost one goal in every 3 appearances.

In the first period, he actually scored 55 goals in 145 appearances, and in the second 48 goals in 151 appearances which both were at league level. They say Doni made 323 appearances, scored 112 goals, and provided 28 assists for Atalanta across all competitions in both these periods. As you see, that ratio of one goal in every three appearances is there in his total appearances for the Italian club, too. Doni was a technical player during his playtime and creative enough to be called a playmaking offensive midfielder. He had a powerful and accurate mid-range shot plus that, as mentioned above, he could also create chances for his teammates when the time was not right for him to step in for scoring.

Gianpaolo Bellini

The only one-club man on the list of best Atalanta players of all time, Gianpaolo Bellini is a 42-year-old retired Italian footballer who played as a defender during his career and, as mentioned above, only for one club which is Atalanta. Bellini made a total of 434 appearances for Atalanta during his career which has made him the footballer with most appearances for Atalanta. He also holds the record for the most number of second yellow cards received with Atalanta with 7 second yellow cards and is the third footballer in the history of the Italian club to have received the most number of yellow cards (59). Bellini was mainly deployed as a left back during his playtime but he was also capable of playing on the right flank and as a central defender. When Bellini made his debut for Atalanta as a senior player in 1998-99 season, they were competing in Serie B, but it didn’t last long as they got promoted again to Serie A in the next season (1999-2000). All in all, out of 18 seasons that Bellini served Atalanta, they competed 5 in Serie B and the rest in Serie A.

Adriano Bassetto

Another footballer on the list of best Atalanta players of all time who is also one of Atalanta all-time top scorers - actually Atalanta’s 6th top scorer of all time with 56 goals, Adriano Bassetto is also the first passed footballer on the list. He served Atalanta for 4 years between 1953 and 1957 making 125 appearances and scoring 56 goals for them in the process only at league level. With that goalscoring ratio (0.44), we can say he was kind of a prolific scorer at least with Atalanta and if you know that he played as an attacking midfielder and not actually as a forward, that ratio even looks better for him.

Unlike the other footballers already mentioned on the list, Atalanta was not the club Bassetto served the most during his career, but Sampdoria whom he served for 7 years between 1946 and 1953 during which he scored 92 goals in his 196 appearances for them only at league level. As you see, he actually got almost the same goalscoring ratio at Sampdoria, too. Bassetto also served the then Serie C club,

Lucchese

, for 4 years between 1958 and 1962 finishing his service to them with a little bit lower goalscoring ratio which came from the 28 goals he scored in his 100 appearances for them at league level.

Jorgen Leschly Sorensen

The second passed and the only Danish footballer - actually forward - on the list of best Atalanta players of all time, Jorgen Leschly Sorensen served Atalanta for 4 years between 1949 and 1953 scoring 51 goals in his 134 appearances for them at league level. That gets Sorensen a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.38 at Atalanta which is not bad in general but still lower than that of Bassetto who was an attacking midfielder. Other than Atalanta, Sorensen also served AC Milan during his career and even with a better goalscoring ratio (0.43) which came from the 28 goals he scored in his 64 appearances for them at league level. And the interesting fact here is that while he didn’t win any trophies with Atalanta during his service to them he won a Serie A title with Milan in 1954-55 season during his 2-year service to them. However, you shouldn’t forget that Sorensen is still one of Atalanta all-time top scorers - actually 9th - with the 51 goals he scored for them during his career. Sorensen died in February 1999 at the age of 76.

Angelo Longoni

Yet another passed footballer on the list of best Atalanta players of all time, Angelo Longoni played for 5 Italian clubs including Atalanta and AC Milan during his career. He played both as a midfielder and winger and served Atalanta more than any other club during his career; actually for 7 years between 1954 and 1961 during which he managed to make 196 appearances and score 37 goals for the Italian club. They say Longoni was a pacey player with the ability to shoot with both his feet and send good crosses from the flanks, yet he was not a very technical player. Despite this, he was still considered as a threat for opposition especially due to his high pace. The only club trophy Longoni won during his career was a Serie B title with Atalanta in 1958-59 season. Other than that, he didn’t win any trophy with the other clubs he served during his career. One interesting fact about Longoni is that he made only one appearance for the Italian national team during his play time but in the same appearance which was against Austria he managed to score 2 goals for his team leading them to a 2-1 victory. Longoni died in June 1993 at the age of 60.

Angelo Domenghini

Having served Atalanta for 4 years at the start of his career, Angelo Domenghini is a 80-year-old retired Italian forward and winger who not only served Atalanta but also the top Italian clubs, Inter Milan, Cagliari, and AS Roma, during his career. He actually won more club trophies with Inter Milan than any other club he served during his career, however, when he was with Atalanata he also won a Coppa Italia in 1963 and became the same competition’s top scorer with 5 goals 3 of which he scored against Tornio in the competition’s final. Domenghini also managed to win Euro 1968 and finish as runner-up in 1970 World Cup with the Italian national team. He was kind of an agile player with good acceleration who also possessed creativity and top technical abilities which allowed him to beat opposition players in one-on-one situations, however, that didn’t help him to score so many goals as he scored a total of 109 league goals in 417 appearances from which 17 goals were scored for Atalanta in 69 appearances.

Glenn Stromberg

Not specifically a Danish but a Swedish footballer on the list of best Atalanta players of all time, Glenn Stromberg is a 62-year-old retired footballer who played as a central midfielder for three clubs, namely the Swedish club, IFK Göteborg, Benfica and Atalanta, during his career. Stromberg’s years of service in football was actually divided almost in half between

IFK Göteborg

and Atalanta whom he served for seven and eight years, respectively, and in between, it was actually Benfica who was served by him just for a season (1983-84). Despite the fact that Stromberg served IFK Göteborg and Atalanta for almost the same number of seasons, his presence at Atalanta was much more felt as he made more than twice as much appearances for the Italian club (219) than his home-country club, IFK Göteborg, at league level. He was not a prolific goalscorer at all as he scored almost one goal in every 10 of his club appearances, however, he acted like a professional in midfield and was nicknamed “the Marathon Man” for his work rate and elegant style of play in his role.

Piero Gardoni

Another defender on the list of

best Atalanta players of all time

, Piero Gardoni was an Italian footballer who was not only a product of Atalanta but also served the Italian club more than any other club during his career; actually for 9 years between 1958 and 1967. This was as he played for the other clubs he served during his career for a year or two. Gardoni made a total of 213 appearances for Atalanta from which 209 took place within Serie A. In fact, the only season that he played in Serie B with Atalanta was his first season at the club, actually 1958-59 season, that Atalanta won a promotion to Serie A and remained in the top-tier Italian league up until the end of Gordoni’s service to them in  1967. Besides the Serie B title Gordoni won with Atalanta in 1958-59 season, he also won a Coppa Italia with them in 1962-63 season. Gordoni died in December 1994 at the age of 60 after he was diagnosed with a disease that led to his suicide.

Severo Cominelli

Considered as one of the best players in Atalanta’s history, Severo Cominelli is a passed Italian footballer who served Atalanta more than any other club during his career and in three time periods: Once from 1934 to 1941, another time in 1943-44 season, and yet another time from 1947 to 1949 which sums up to 10 years. During this time he actually made 264 appearances and scored 65 goals for Atalanta only at league level meaning that he scored almost one goal in every 4 appearances for the Italian club averagely which is not bad for a midfielder. The other club Cominelli served in between the periods that he served Atalanta was Inter Milan but with a much lower goalscoring ratio; actually around one goal in every 20 appearances. Cominelli died in April 1998 at the age of 82.
