Riggs, along with fellow Rat Private Desmond "Des" Wilmot and British Lieutenant Richard Jacobs, is tasked to collect supplies for the British Army after a failed ambush attempt against a German convoy.
Major Henry Hamms imprisons Riggs, Des, and Jacobs for insubordination after they acquire intelligence about General Erwin Rommel and destroy a German depot in the process.
During the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942, Hamms orders Riggs and the Rats to form a defensive line, but Riggs disobeys the order and attempts to regain a hill and call in bomber help with Des by his side.
Despite the fact that Des is killed in action, the two of them succeed. Riggs, enraged by Hamms' disregard of the Rats' contribution to the combat, punches him in the face, putting him in prison.
Lieutenant Wade Jackson of the United States Navy takes part in the Battle of Midway with his tail gunner, Aviation Machinist's Mate Mateo Hernandez, in June 1942. Jackson and Hernandez's plane gets shot down while attacking the Imperial Japanese Army on Bougainville in November 1943, and the two are captured by IJA soldiers.
The 93rd Infantry Division saves them and later assists them in obtaining an Imperial Japanese Navy Aichi D3A to aid the division in reclaiming the island.
Polina Petrova, a Red Army nurse, sees the German invasion of Stalingrad in August 1942. She is unable to save her father Boris from enemy troops, but she is able to flee with her brother Misha and many Soviet partisans.
As she chases Leo Steiner, the Wehrmacht commander responsible for the invasion, Petrova earns the nickname "Lady Nightingale." Petrova and Misha attempt to assassinate Steiner in Stalingrad in January 1943, but Misha is seriously injured.
He makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to give Petrova enough time to flee. When Petrova confronts Steiner and kills him and his personal army, the residents of Stalingrad are inspired to recapture the city from the Nazis. She then sets her sights on Steiner's superior, Hermann Freisinger.
Sergeant Arthur Kingsley, a British paratrooper, takes part in Operation Tonga in June 1944, where he and the Parachute Regiment assist the Allies in entering Normandy by destroying the Merville Gun Battery and numerous other bridges. Sergeant Richard Webb, a fellow paratrooper who would eventually become Kingsley's right-hand man, befriends Kingsley.
Captain Carver Butcher would eventually recruit Kingsley, Webb, Petrova, Jackson, and Riggs, as well as a sixth man called Milos Novak, to establish the first special operations task team, codename Vanguard.
Kingsley is appointed as the task force's head. Task Force Vanguard hijacks a train to Hamburg, Germany, in April 1945, in search of information about Project Phoenix, a classified Nazi initiative directed by Freisinger.
The team is arrested by Freisinger's men while infiltrating a Kriegsmarine submarine, with the exception of Jackson, who escapes, and Novak, who is bludgeoned to death by Freisinger.
Freisinger appoints Schutzstaffel officer Jannick Richter to interrogate Vanguard at the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin. After attempting to steal a plane, Jackson is apprehended, and Richter demoralizes the team by killing Webb.
Richter attempts to learn more about Project Phoenix's objective and Freisinger's involvement by questioning Petrova and Riggs about Steiner and Rommel's ties to Freisinger.
He deduces that the project was a coup attempt to install Freisinger as the Fourth Reich's new Führer. As the Red Army besieges Berlin in the aftermath of Adolf Hitler's suicide, Riggs escapes interrogation and frees the team, while Kingsley avenges Webb by killing Richter.
Freisinger is pursued by Vanguard to the airport, where he is caught and burned alive. The four then board Freisinger's Luftwaffe plane, where they discover countless German documents and assets, showing Nazi secret operations all over the world. Kingsley decides to investigate Project Aggregat, a top-secret V2 rocket facility, and sends Jackson after it.

All eight squads share a pool of 12 lives (or 18 in Trios) that they give to squadmates one by one while fighting each other across four maps created exclusively for this game style.
The game ends when all of the lives have been used up, and the team with the most lives wins the tournament.

The "All" pacing option in the Quick Play menu can also be used to mix these preferences. In a 6v6 lobby, "tactical" pacing provides a typical Call of Duty experience with traditional combat tempo.
The "Assault" pacing, on the other hand, raises the lobby player count marginally by providing more balanced, action-packed fighting throughout all maps.
Finally, the "Blitz" pacing provides the highest lobby player numbers, with high-action lobbies that are similar to Modern Warfare's Ground War mode.
