Holger Badstuber Biography

Holger Badstuber, born 13 March 1989 in Memmingen, is a German footballer who plays as a defender for Swiss club FC Luzern. He has also played a total of 31 matches for the German national team between 2010 and 2015.

He started his career as a youngster at

in 2002. He made his debut for the reserves in 2007 and eventually joined Bayern Munich's senior team in July 2009. His Bundesliga debut came on 8 August in a 1-1 draw against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Badstuber became Bayern's key player from the start of the 2009/2010 season.

Holger Badstuber Early Life

Holger Badstuber was born and raised in Rot an der Rot in the district of Biberach and has a sibling. From an early age, his parents were supporting him in his football career and they accompanied him regularly to training in Stuttgart and later in Munich. Badstuber completed his secondary school education in Munich at the FC Bayern Munich boarding school. He completed his civilian service at the Bavarian State School for the Physically Handicapped.

A youth player from TSV Rot an der Rot 1890 e. V., Badstuber made his way via the youth department of VfB Stuttgart to the FC Bayern Munich youth system in 2002. He played with Bayern's A-Juniors in the 2006/07 season in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga, playing in 20 games.

The Bayern team won the south/south-west season and made it to the final round of the German championship. During the final round, Badstuber had three further appearances and scored one goal. FC Bayern Munich

Having already spent part of the 2008/09 pre-season with the record champion's professional squad, he went on to sign a professional contract valid until 2011 on 1 February 2009. Head coach Louis van Gaal, who joined FC Bayern in the summer of 2009, fielded Badstuber for 90 minutes in the match against TSG 1899

on 8 August 2009 which was his first Bundesliga match. The match ended 1-1.

On 4 December 2009, his 2-1 goal in the home match against Borussia Mönchengladbach was the final score and was also his first Bundesliga goal. Badstuber's contract with FC Bayern München was renewed early until 2014 at the start of 2010.

Badstuber left FC Bayern Munich in the winter transfer window of the 2016/17 season after fourteen and a half years with the club and signed with

Having been on the substitutes' bench for his new team's first two official matches, he was named in FC Schalke 04's starting eleven for the away match against FC Bayern Munich on 4 February 2017. Badstuber was unsuccessful in the course of the season against Schalke's centre-backs Benedikt Höwedes and Matija Nastasić. VfB Stuttgart

He signed with VfB Stuttgart on 4 August 2017 for one season. He had a great 2017-2018 season during which he picked up his level and scored 2 goals, including a wonderful diving header against Mainz (1-0 win), which provided Stuttgart with the victory.

This was his 2nd goal in the

, nearly 8 years after his beautiful free-kick for Bayern. As a result of his good performances, his contract at VfB Stuttgart was extended until June 2021. His 2018/2019 season was more challenging, plagued by injuries, but also by the addition of Markus Weinzierl, who he worked with at Schalke, and had a bad relationship, which reduced his playing time, resulting in only 11 games played and no goals scored.

When Stuttgart was relegated, he ended up playing in the second division. Over the course of 2019/2020, he played 21 games and scored 2 goals in all competitions, however, the arrival of Pellegrino Matarazzo in January 2020 was a threat to him, as Matarazzo dropped him to the bench for the final 3 games of the season. Badstuber was not included in the friendly matches in Austria on 18 August 2020.

He was transferred to VfB's 2nd team at the beginning of the season, which played in the Regionalliga, the 4th division. This move was motivated by Matarazzo's desire to have a younger team but also by his attitude on the pitch, particularly because he was accused of having a sharp attitude that could destabilize his teammates.

Moreover, during the 2019/2020 season, he was suspended for one match and fined €8,000 after he insulted a referee during the match against Holstein Kiel (0-1 defeat). FC Luzern

After the humiliation in Stuttgart, he was able to reach an agreement with Swiss club

During these early games in Switzerland, he was criticized at the start of the season for recurring mistakes and his aggressive behaviour, which was blamed on him at Stuttgart as well.

Despite an average start to the season, he regained his form and managed to secure many draws for Luzern due to his strong defensive skills. German National Team

Badstuber played his first match for the U19 national team on 14 November 2007 in a 1-0 win over England. On 27 May 2008, he made his second and last appearance in the 5:2 win against Slovakia. He first played for the U20 national team on 3 September 2008 in a 4-2 win over Austria.

Senior national team

Named to the extended squad for the 2010 World Cup by German coach Joachim Löw on 6 May 2010, he debuted for the senior team on 29 May in Budapest in a 3-0 win over

in a friendly match, coming on as a 71st-minute substitute for Arne Friedrich. Against Australia on 13 June and against Serbia on 18 June 2010, he played his only World Cup matches.

He was substituted for Mario Gómez in the 77th minute against Serbia. Because of his troubles with his opponent Miloš Krasić, Jérôme Boateng replaced him in the following matches and Marcell Jansen in the closing stages. In contrast to his position at the club, where he was in central defence and only played on the outside as a substitute, he was deployed as a nominal left defender at the World Cup.

He scored his first senior international goal on 7 September 2010 when he netted 5-1 in a 6-1 win over Azerbaijan in the 2012 European Championship qualifier. Badstuber was a key player in central defence at the European Championship and appeared in all five of Germany's matches until the defeat in the semi-finals. Family, Children and Relationships

His father Hermann died of cancer a few weeks after he signed his first contract with Bayern Munich in 2009 when he was only 53 years old. He had coached his son when he was a boy and later sent him to the youth team of VfB Stuttgart.

Badstuber recalls that they often travelled to the Olympic Stadium in Munich for Bundesliga matches. It was almost 150 kilometres from Rot in Upper Swabia, the Badstubers' home. The father and son grilled sausages during the break, and it was always FC Bayern, whose players hung on posters above the bed in his child's room.

Holger had married his love of life Natascha Badstuber back in September 2015 with no photograph of the wedding appearing in the "Bild" newspaper or on Facebook, works as an authorised signatory in the wholesale market hall. The couple has no children together.

During his football career, Holger Badstuber has always been active in many charity projects and is a supporter and ambassador of the FIT4FUTURE national campaign which is an initiative of the Cleven Foundation.
