Luuk does not rush his shot and does not become agitated when confronted with a challenge. He stands very steadily and waits for his chance. De Jong made his Eredivisie debut as a substitute in a match against Breda. De Jong was promoted to the starting lineup after another appearance off the bench against Heerenveen. De Jong assisted Ben Sahar in De Graafschap's 9–0 triumph over Willem II in their debut match together. In a home encounter against Twente, he scored his first Eredivisie goal. De Jong produced a handball moments later, giving Twente a penalty, which Blaise N'Kufo converted; the game ended 2–2.

His second goal came against Heracles Almelo at home. Rogier Meijer headed on a free kick taken by Resit Schuurman. De Jong scored an overhead kick while standing with his back to goal, giving De Graafschap a 1–0 win. He injured his ankle in a home game against

Twente 

Twente declared on April 6, 2009, that de Jong has signed a three-year contract with an option for another year. On July 1, 2009, his contract would begin. He made his Twente debut in a cup match against Joure, coming on as a second-half substitute to replace Dario Vujicevic. In the 8–0 triumph over Joure, he had two assists. In the cup encounter against Capelle, he scored his first two goals for Twente.

in the Europa League knockout stage (round of 32) due to the injury of Blaise N'Kufo. In Twente's away game against Werder Bremen, he scored his first Europa League goal. Twente was already behind 0–3 when de Jong scored a goal past Christian Vander's goalkeeper to make it 1–3.

De Jong scored his first league goal for Twente against Nijmegen on February 28, 2010. This game was won by Twente with a score of 2–1. On 10 April, he scored his second league goal in injury time in a home game against Heerenveen, which ended 2–0. De Jong was in the Champions League play-off game against

In a 5–1 thrashing of Heerenveen four days later, he scored his first Eredivisie goal of the season. De Jong scored two more goals in Twente's 4–1 win over VVV Venlo the following week, on his 21st birthday. Borussia Monchengladbach 

De Jong signed a five-year contract with Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach on July 18, 2012, for a cost of €15 million (£12.6 million), after stating that it was his goal to play for the club. De Jong remarked eight months after the move that the Bundesliga was a "wonderful location to develop as a player."

He made his debut for Monchengladbach in a match against Munich 1860, in which his team won 4–2. However, de Jong was mostly unnoticed in his maiden encounter, scoring or assisting on no goals. He made his debut appearance in a European game for Monchengladbach on August 21, scoring an own goal from a free kick in a 3–1 loss to Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League Qualifiers. In a 2–3 defeat against 1. Nurnberg on September 15, scored his first goal for the club, converting a tap-in after a cross from Patrick Herrmann.

De Jong's first-team opportunities diminished later in the season after a falling out with manager Lucien Favre, and he only made twenty-three appearances, scoring six times. De Jong started near the end of the season that he felt confident in his ability to prove himself as the finest striker in the league. De Jong's first-team spot remained limited in the 2013–14 season, as his playing minutes reduced drastically and he only made fourteen appearances in the first half of the season.

Newcastle United (loan) 

De Jong signed a loan deal with Premier League club Newcastle United until the conclusion of the 2013–14 season on January 29, 2014. On February 1, he made his Tyne-Wear derby debut against

. After failing to score in any of his twelve games for Newcastle, de Jong stated in May 2014 that he would be returning to Borussia Monchengladbach.

PSV Eindhoven 

De Jong signed a five-year contract with

at €5.5 million on July 12, 2014. De Jong stated after his move to PSV that he believed he had made a mistake by moving to Germany.
