Borussia Dortmund Summer Transfer 2021

The 2021 summer transfer window in Germany is open from 1 July until 6pm CEST on 31 August. Borussia Dortmund moved quickly to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign. Read on to find out more about Borussia Dortmund Summer Transfer 2021.

Borussia Dortmund has spent a strange season: from sacking their manager Lucien Favre, replacing him with Edin Terzic, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League by finishing the Bundesliga in the 3rd place, and most importantly, winning the DFB – Pokal.

They entered the summer transfer season with the main goal of “not to lose Erling Haaland”, and they somehow managed to do so. However,

Jadon Sancho

finally made his move to Manchester United, and Thomas Delaney joined Sevilla.

Nonetheless, they did not just sit there unconcerned: Borussia Dortmund signed with the Dutch Donyell Mallen to replace Jadon Sancho, and bought Stuttgart’s goal keeper Gregor Kobel to solve the keeping problem they have been struggling with for the last couple of years.

Donyell Malen: from PSV Eindhoven to Borussia Dortmund

  • Full name: Donyell Malen

  • Date of birth: 19 January 1999 (age 22)

  • Place of birth: Wieringen, Netherlands

  • Height: 1.79 m (5 ft 10 in)

  • Position(s): Forward

After Jadon Sancho’s departure, the

Borussia Dortmund transfer news

has picked up as they seek reinforcements. One of those reinforcement was PSV forward Donyell Malen.

The 22 – year – old Dutch attacker is the most glaring player on the list of the Dortmund 2021 summer transfer arrivals. The Black and Yellows completed the singing of Donyell Malen for €30.00m from PSV Eindhoven with a 5 – year contract.

Malen’s statistics throughout 20/21 season completely accounts for the amount of money Dortmund had to pay for him: Malen featured in a total of 45 games within all competitions for

PSV Eindhoven

, scored 27 goals, and provided 10 assists.

Moreover, with 19 goals in the Eredivisie, he was the league’s 2nd top scorer, and helped his club finish the league as the runner ups. Dortmund fans have gotten their hopes very high about seeing Malen – Haaland duo in 21/22 season.

Malen, who played for Ajax and

Arsenal

at youth level, moved to PSV in 2017 and played for Jong PSV in the second tier. He won Player of the Year in his first season. He made four first-team appearances for the side which won the Eredivisie title in 2017-18.

The following campaign, he was promoted to the senior side and scored 10 league goals. In 2020-21, he finished the season with 27 in all competitions -- his best-ever single season tally.

Malen has 13 Netherlands caps and was part of the Euro 2020 squad, starting two matches, including the surprise round of 16 defeat to Czech Republic.

People believe that the deal kills two birds with one stone as Malen acts as a direct replacement for Jadon Sancho, with similar pace and extra hunger for goals, and he can replace

Erling Haaland

in the frontline.

In fact, for €30 million, Borussia Dortmund have just replaced two of their best players. While Malen doesn’t carry all of the same traits as Sancho, he offers a different element to the Dortmund attack with his pace, movement and natural striking instincts. That is predicted to be a good strategy in case that Haaland departs, too, with Malen carrying the ability to lead the line in behind.

"Borussia Dortmund is a top European club that is always at the top of the Bundesliga and has high demands on itself in the Champions League. I can hardly wait to be on the pitch with my new teammates, to be able to measure myself against the best.

"And of course, I'm looking forward to the fans and the stadium that all of Europe raves about," Malen told reporters.

Gregor Kobel: from VfB Stuttgart to Borussia Dortmund

  • Full name: Gregor Kobel

  • Date of birth: 6 December 1997 (age 23)

  • Place of birth: Zürich, Switzerland

  • Height: 1.94 m (6 ft 4 in)

  • Position(s): Goalkeeper

A vital need of

Dortmund 2021 summer transfer

has been met by signing Stuttgart’s 23-year-old goal keeper. Dortmund has been harmed a lot from goal keepers’ mistakes in the last couple of years. They have lost so many important points.

If those mistakes had not been happened, perhaps Dortmund would have won 2 or 3 more titles only within last 5 years. Nonetheless, to solve to problem, they confirmed the signing of Gregor Kobel from

VfB Stuttgart

with €15.00m.

Kobel is a former Hoffenheim player who spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan at Augsburg before joining Bundesliga 2's Stuttgart for the next season, which saw them earn promotion to the Bundesliga.

"Borussia Dortmund is one of the largest and most famous football clubs in the world, a club that claims to fight for the championship title and the DFB Cup every year and to play in the Champions League. It makes me proud to play for BVB. I would like to contribute my part to the future Dortmund success," Kobel told reporters.

The Swiss goal keeper featured in 33 Bundesliga games last season, conceded 54 goals, and kept 5 clean sheets. One fun fact about this move is that with Kobel being added to the squad, now all 3 main Borussia Dortmund Goal Keepers are from Switzerland: Roman Burki, Marwin Hitz, and Gregor Kobel.

Kobel was part of Switzerland's Euro 2020 squad this summer, while Dortmund's other goalkeepers Bürki and Hitz were not selected.

We have to wait and see if he can make a safe keeper for the Black and Yellows, or at least be a keeper not to concede embarrassing goals!

Soumaïla Coulibaly: from Paris Saint-Germain U19 to Borussia Dortmund

  • Full name: Soumaïla Coulibaly

  • Date of birth: 14 October 2003 (age 17)

  • Place of birth: Montfermeil, France

  • Height: 1, 87 m (6 ft 2 in)

  • Position(s): Centre-Back

The 17-year-old center back has been signed from PSG in

Dortmund 2021 summer transfer

window for free. After starting his football in the club in his home town of Montfermeil - some 15.5 miles to the east of central Paris - Coulibaly joined PSG's youth levels academy in the summer of 2019.

The same as every other place throughout the globe, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on football tournaments, such as France's junior category leagues as well as the UEFA Youth Champions League that have been either suspended for most of the season or completely called off.

This has severely restricted Coulibaly's playing time on the pitch in competitive games since the start of the 2019/20 season.

However, the teenager stepped up to train with PSG Senior team – with

Thomas Tuchel

being the manager at that time – as a 16-year-old early in the 2020/21 season and went on to do so along with a small elite group of youngsters cherry-picked from the club’s academy after Mauricio Pochettino took over in early 2021.

An ACL injury happened to him in training in the February of 2020, which means Coulibaly's 2020/21 season was over. But when he recovers and gets ready to get back on the pitch, he'll be a Dortmund player.

His style of play is often compared to Bayern Munich’s new signing Dayot Upamecano. The lesson Coulibaly will have learned from trying to keep some of the game's best forwards in check on the PSG training pitch will stand him in good stead in the Bundesliga where Upamecano has established himself as a major force.

Abdoulaye Kamara: from Paris Saint-Germain U19 to Borussia Dortmund

  • Full name: Abdoulaye Kamara

  • Date of birth: 6 November 2004 (age 16)

  • Place of birth: Guinea

  • Height: 1, 89 m (6 ft 2 in)

  • Position(s): Defensive midfielder

Another signing from PSG U19 team in

Borussia Dortmund’s 2021/22 summer transfer

is the 16 – year – old defensive midfielder. Kamara has citizenships for both France and Guinea.

Kamara, who remains eligible to represent Guinea internationally, is a defensive midfielder who most recently played for PSG's U19s, three years ahead of the curve.

He made his debut for the first team in a friendly against

Sochaux

last summer, and Dortmund were convinced he would make quick progress at the Signal Iduna Park.

He has not made an appearance for Paris Saint-Germain in official matches – although he made his debut for the first team in a friendly match against Sochaux last summer. He is a highly talented and determined player, and despite his young age, his body is very strong.

Dortmund authorities as well as their fans are hoping that he will develop accordingly in the senior level. His contract with Borussia Dortmund is a long-term one.

Kamara is the third player on Dortmund's books who have previously been in PSG's youth set-up, following Dan-Axel Zagadou, and Soumaila Coulibaly, while Thomas Meunier also previously played for the French side.

Marius Wolf

.

"I want to try to assert myself again under new coach Marco Rose," Wolf said in an interview.

Looking back at his 2020/21 campaign with Köln, who narrowly escaped relegation from the Bundesliga, Wolf said, "Even though it was a difficult season, I had a great time here in a great city and with a good team."

Dortmund has had loan spells at Hertha BSC and Köln following his move to Dortmund from

Eintracht Frankfurt

in 2018.

Jadon Sancho: from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United

  • Full name: Jadon Malik Sancho

  • Date of birth: 25 March 2000 (age 21)

  • Place of birth: Camberwell, England

  • Height: 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m)

  • Position(s): Winger

Jadon Sancho

’s transfer to Manchester United was not only the most remarkable item in the list of Borussia Dortmund transfer news, but it was also one of the biggest transfers in the Europe. The Red Devils finally confirmed the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s star for €85.00m.

The 21 – year – old winger had been pursued by Manchester United in 20/21 summer transfer window but the deal did not happen, until Dortmund eventually let Jadon Sancho leave. He has been one of the best players in Bundesliga throughout last 3 seasons.

He featured in 26 Bundesliga games last season in which he scored 8 goals and provided 11 assists. In 2019/20 season, Sancho’s performance was even more astonishing by scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists within 32 games.

And in 2018/19 campaign, the English winger scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists within 34 appearances. Moreover, he also played in 6 UEFA Champions League games within which he scored 2 goals and provided 2 assists, alongside scoring 6 goals and providing 5 assists throughout 6 DFB-Pokal games and being the vital player in winning the 20/21 German Cup at the end of the season.

Sancho went from strength to strength since arriving in Germany from

Manchester City

in 2017.

This season, despite suffering a calf injury in March that also kept him out of his club’s Champions League quarter-final clash against City, Sancho has continued to impress with 12 goals and 18 assists to his name.

In his four seasons of Bundesliga football, Sancho amassed 46 goals in 133 appearances. He left Dortmund in their weakest position in some time, albeit with a potentially exciting future to look forward to play under former Borussia Monchengladbach boss Marco Rose.

A full rebuild will not be possible with the Sancho money, but it should allow BVB to address some of their inadequacies, as well as find the next big thing that they can sell on to a European giant in the near future.

We have to wait and see if this transfer will work out for Sancho himself, Manchester United, or Dortmund. Or how much will Dortmund be harmed of losing such decisive player? Furthermore, he is a product of Manchester City youth academy, and his confrontation with hi former club could be very interesting. His contract with Manchester United lasts until 2026.

Leonardo Balerdi: from Borussia Dortmund to Olympique Marseille

  • Full name: Leonardo Balerdi Rosa

  • Date of birth: 26 January 1999 (age 22)

  • Place of birth: Villa Mercedes, Argentina

  • Height: 1.87 m (6 ft 1+1⁄2 in)

  • Position(s): Centre back

The Argentinean Center back was signed by Borussia Dortmund from

Boca Juionrs

in the January of 2019 for €15.50m. He was at the club until the summer of 2020, appearing in a total of 8 games for the senior team and featuring in 12 games for Borussia Dortmund II.

Balerdi joined Borussia Dortmund from Boca Juniors for a fee of around 15 million euros in January 2019. But he failed to break into the starting XI and was limited to just eight first-team appearances (and one start) for the Black and Yellows. He then joined Olympique Marseille on a season long loan deal last summer.

He made a loan move to France to play for Olympique Marseille for 2020/21 season. Balerdi played in 25 games for Marseille in the recent season, and his performance convinced the club’s manager to sign him permanently from Borussia Dortmund in 2021/22 summer for €11.00m.

Currently 22-years-old, Balerdi has shown good potential to become a powerful defender in near future, somewhere beside Signal Iduna Park where they let him go easily.

Thomas Delaney: from Borussia Dortmund to Sevilla

  • Full name: Thomas Joseph Delaney

  • Date of birth: 3 September 1991 (age 29)

  • Place of birth: Frederiksberg, Denmark

  • Height: 1.82 m (6 ft 0 in)

  • Position(s): Defensive midfielder

The Danish defensive midfielder moved to Spain to play for

Sevilla

after spending 3 years at Signal Iduna Park. Sevilla paid Dortmund €6.00m for this move, which seems to be a real bargain in today’s market.

He had joined Dortmund from Werder Bremen in the summer of 2018 for €20.00m, and has been one of the important players of the squad throughout these past 3 seasons, despite the often changes in managers. He has featured in a total of 88 games for the Black and Yellows, scored 4 goal and provided 11 assists.

Moreover, he achieved 1 German Super Cup (2019/20) as well as 1 DFB-Pokal (2020/21) with Borussia Dortmund. He will continue his career in Spain, playing in one of the best clubs in the country.

Thomas Delaney

has been heavily linked with a move away from Dortmund all summer long. With less than one year left on his contract and an extension not in sight, it was clear that Delaney’s future would lie away from BVB.

The 29-year-old attracted the interest of a number of clubs following his impressive performances for Denmark at the European Championships. And after lots of rumours, he chose to make the switch to Sevilla.

Jeremy Tolijan: from Borussia Dortmund to Sassuolo

  • Full name: Jeremy Isaiah Richard Toljan

  • Date of birth: 8 August 1994 (age 27)

  • Place of birth: Stuttgart, Germany

  • Height: 1.82 m (6 ft 0 in)

  • Position(s): Right back

Another departure in the list of Dortmund 2021 summer transfer belongs to the German right – back Jeremy Tolijan who agreed to join Sassuolo on a permanent deal until 2025.

Toljan joined Borussia Dortmund from

TSG Hoffenheim

in August 2017 but wasn’t able to become a regular starter for the team. He was limited to just 23 appearances for the Black and Yellows, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

He joined Celtic on loan in January 2019 but returned to Dortmund after failing to make an impact in Scotland. He then completed a temporary switch to US Sassuolo in July 2019. The loan spell was extended last summer, with a mandatory purchase clause of five million euros added into the contract. And that clause has now taken effect after he reached the minimum number of appearances required.

He had been loaned out to the Italian club since 2019 with a 2-year loan contract, and by the contract being ended this summer, Sassuolou decided to sign him permanently.

He has been crucial to the Italian side’s squad, having played in 26 Serie A games last season, and in 29 the season before that (2019/20). Dortmund received €3.50m to allow this move. Before being loaned out to

Sassuolo

, Toljan had played for Celtic in the Scottish league in another loan move.

Lukasz Piszczek: from Borussia Dortmund to Goczalkowice

  • Full name: Łukasz Piotr Piszczek

  • Date of birth: 3 June 1985 (age 36)

  • Place of birth: Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland

  • Height: 1.84 m (6 ft 0 in)

  • Position(s): Right-back, centre-back

The Dortmund 2021 summer transfer will be remembered as the summer in which one of the club’s legends left the club:

Lukasz Piszczek

moved out of Signal Iduna Park stadium after 11 years. The 36-year-old right back joined a club in Polish’s Fourth Tier league!

Piszczek had initially planned to hang up his playing boots last summer, but he signed a one-year extension to see out his 14th and final campaign of Bundesliga football.

It was at that point the former Poland international, who turns 36 in June, announced his intentions to link back up with Goczalkowice in his country's third tier, something he still plans to do a year on.

"I have concrete plans in Poland and have already postponed these plans for a year. I want to play with friends from my hometown club Goczalkowice, where my father is vice-president, and take care of the youth academy that we started in 2019," he said in 2020.

Piszczek is a two-time Bundesliga and three-time DFB Cup winner, and also got his hands on three German Supercups after moving to Dortmund from Hertha Berlin in summer 2010.

He joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2010 from Hertha BSC, and stayed at the club for 11 seasons. With him in the squad for over a decade, Borussia Dortmund won 2 Bundesliga titles, 3 German Cups (DFB-Pokal), as well as 3 German Super Cups.

Moreover, having made 382 appearances throughout all competitions, Piszczek stands 7th in the list of the players with the most number of games played for Dortmund. He has scored 19 goals and provided 64 assists within those games. His performances and achievements will forever be admired by the Black and Yellows’ fans.

Sergio Gomez: from Borussia Dortmund to RSC Anderlecht

  • Full name: Sergio Gómez Martín

  • Date of birth: 4 September 2000 (age 20)

  • Place of birth: Badalona, Spain

  • Height: 1.71 m (5 ft 7 in)

  • Position(s): Attacking midfielder

A product of Barcelona youth academy, La Masia, he joined Borussia Dortmund from Barcelona U19 team in the January of 2018 at the age of 17.

After spending half a season playing for Borussia Dortmund II, Borussia Dortmund U19, and only making 3 appearances for the senior team, he was loaned out to the Spanish side SD Hueska for 2 seasons- until the summer of 2021.

Gomez was not part of Borussia Dortmund’s plans for the upcoming campaign. Ruhr Nachrichten reported earlier this week that the BVB bosses had two offers for the 20 year old. And now he has joined Belgian giants

RSC Anderlecht

, where he will be looking to make a fresh start.

He was sold to the Belgium club RSC Anderlecht for €2.25m on a permanent deal. He had been a very important player in Hueska squad, having featured in 68 matches throughout 2 seasons.

He is only 20-year-old now, and has played for Spain national team in youth levels (U17 – U18 – U19 – U21), and hopes to be called up for his countries senior team sometime soon.
