Serie A 2021-22 Season Preview

Another season of Serie A is just around the corner, so join us in this Serie A 2021-22 season preview as we try to find out how the season might go:

Last season we had one of the greatest Serie A seasons in recent memory but just as Serie A was getting closer to its glory days of the 90s and early 2000s when the competition was brimming with great players and teams that were playing some exciting football, the realities of COVID-related financial problems hit and the league has now seen some of its star players like Romelu Lukaku, Cristian Romero, Gianluigi Donnarumma and many others depart their respected clubs to go abroad.

Perhaps the team that was most hit by the financial troubles was Serie A’s reigning champions, Inter Milan, which makes their job defending their title that much harder. But at the same time it may make the Serie A even more enjoyable to watch as the gap between teams will become much smaller. Now we all want to know who’ll be in the title race or a relegation battle next season, So let’s get down to this

Serie A 2021-22 season preview

as we try make educated guesses on where teams might end up by the end of the season.

Serie A 2021-22 Season Preview

As we did with our 2021-22

Premier League

and

Bundesliga

season previews, we’ve broken down this preview to 4 categories that will cover from the relegation battle up to the title race as well as what surprises might this season hold for us. So without further ado, here is our Serie A 2021-22 season preview:

Relegation Candidates

As always we’ll try to deliver the bad news first and that is relegation candidates. We have gone with a rather uninspiring choice of predicting all the newly-promoted teams,

Venezia

,

Salerentina

and

Empoli

, as the relegation candidates in the 2021-22 Serie A season.

This is mainly because Serie A, much like the Premier League is turning into a tight-knit competition where the teams with more experience, especially those typically in the lower half of the table, just can handle a relegation battle much easier than the newly-promoted teams. This is partly because they have usually a better-suited squad in a relegation battle than the newly promoted teams, who are got used to a certain attacking style football in Serie B a few months prior and now must change their tactics to be less open.

That being said, we predict that teams like Torino and Spezia will be in the conversation as well since they had such a poor defensive record last season. Torino in particular will be in big trouble if they lose their talisman and the main source of goals, Andrea Belotti, whose incredible amount of goals scored all but ensured Torino’s survival in the past few seasons. As it stands, the bottom of the

Serie A table

will undoubtedly see a heated battle for survival between the 5 teams we mentioned above.

The Race for European Places

This is where Serie A 2021-22 season preview gets interesting and where Serie A actually had us on the edge of our seats last season as the race for finishing in a Champions League spot went all the way up to the last day of the season. what is even more interesting in the upcoming

2021-22 Serie A

season is the fact that the gap between Serie A teams at the top has gotten even smaller. With the massive

exodus of talent

at Inter Milan as well as Juventus’ decline in recent years, it seems that the race for the Champions League spots as well as even the title race is wide open.

The usual suspects will most again battle it out for the 2nd to 6th spots in the Serie A table and those are Atalanta, Napoli, Roma and perhaps even Lazio. What is fascinating here is that these teams have not had a massive overhaul but the likes of Roma, Lazio and Napoli have had manager changes which will undoubtedly change the chemistry and the placements of teams in the top 6 places of our Serie A 2021-22 season preview.

Jose Mourinho as AS Roma’s manager, Mauricio Sarri as Lazio’s manager and Luciano Spalletti as Napoli’s head coach all have a lot to prove this season as they all are thought to be past their best. Mourinho in particular seems dead-set on making AS Roma a powerhouse but no matter how fierce his mentality is, the Special One needs the tools and players to do so and so far in the transfer window, Roma has been uninspiring. If they manage to lock Tammy Abraham in a deal for the next season, Roma will have a far better season than many people think.

As far as Napoli and Lazio go,

Napoli

seems to have the upper hand, especially with their record signing

Victor Osimhen

looking sharp in pre-season. if Spaletti manages to unlock Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess, Napoli will be a very tough team to beat. In regards to Atalanta, we originally predicted to be in a title race in our Serie A 2021-22 season preview but the recent departure of

Cristian Romero

and the possible departure of Duvan Zapata and Josep Illicic will leave them a significantly weaker team. However, they’re likely to finish the 2021-22 Serie A season as the top-scoring team.

Now with all that said and with all the conflicting

Serie A news

, especially transfer news, going around, we predict that all our predictions in the Serie A 2021-22 season preview will be subject to change but for now, our prediction for this Serie A 2021-22 season preview is that Atalanta, Napoli, Roma will finish as the 4th, 5th and 6th teams in the table and Lazio will most likely be the one to finish out of the top 6.

Title Contenders

It seems that the Big 3 are back at it again and will be competing for the scudetto title next season. despite Inter finishing well above anybody else at the top of the Serie A table last season, AC Milan and Juventus were trailing the Nerazzurri quite closely and with

Inter

’s massive loss of talent, the Serie A title race is wide open for any of these teams.

As it is though, Juventus are favorites to win the title in our

Serie A 2021-22 season preview

. Inter Milan will no doubt feel the absence of a player like Lukaku and their former manager, Antonio Conte, but if they recruit well until the end of the transfer window, they’ll give Juve a hard time of it.

AC Milan also had a great team last season and finally got back into the Champions League and seem to be the best Serie A side when it comes to transfers this season. however, the age of some of their forwards like Zlatan and Giroud puts a question mark on Milan’s consistency throughout the season as they’ll most likely get injured during the season. which is why we think they’ll finish in the 3rd spot behind Inter Milan and the Champions,

Juventus

, in our Serie A 2021-22 season preview.

Over-performers and Under-achievers

The last part of our

Serie A 2021-22 season preview

is about the teams that are most likely to surprise or disappoint us next season and oddly enough we’re choosing Mourinho’s AS Roma in both situations. This may seem contradictory but when you look at the squad that is available to Mourinho at Roma, which seems a bit weaker than all their rivals and may become even more weakened with Eden Dzeko leaving, you’ll see our point.

This puts huge pressure on Mourinho to perform this season as he is expected to deliver at Roma. the Portuguese is undoubtedly one of the greatest managers of all time but lately, it seems that he’s lost his mojo. All his three previous tenures as managers of Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham have ended with him being sacked so there is no reason to think that the situation will be different at Roma. However, the Special One might surprise us all and over-perform with AS Roma and prove how special he really is. So that’s why we went for AS Roma as a likely candidate to either disappoint or over-perform with AS Roma
