Sun 20 June 2021 | 15:30

Did you catch yesterday’s games? What happened on and off the pitch in Euro 2020 day 9? Follow us below as we take a look at the things that went on in the tournament yesterday.

Euro 2020 continues onwards with full throttle as we were treated to yet another beautiful day of football in the tournament. From

Cristiano Ronaldo

making headlines for his outrageous speed and pace, to him once again being on the news for his impressive tricks and flicks in an already tough and intense match against Germany, and to a neutral reporter being caught between the players and the supporters of Hungary, many interesting things happened in day 9 of the competition. Let’s take a brief look at everything that went on.

Euro 2020 – Day 9 Review

Here is everything you need to know about the things that happened yesterday.

The Roadrunner

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo showed the world he is still one of the best footballers in the world at the age of 36 with an astonishing top speed of 19mph. The Juventus striker sprinted almost the whole football pitch to reach the other end of the field in a lightning-fast counter-attack, which saw him score his nation’s first goal and put Portugal ahead early in the first half.

While

Portugal

went on to suffer quite a heavy defeat against Germany with a 4-2 loss, football fans were truly baffled by how fast Ronaldo can run at this age, which led to many football pundits analyzing how the former Real Madrid man could run 97 meters with a top speed of 19mph. Many simply hailed him as “sensational” as there was nothing other than respect and admiration for the striker.

Cristiano Ronaldo is on the verge of breaking yet another historic record and becoming the all-time international top scorer in the world, with only Iran’s Ali Daei left to surpass. He has already become the all-time top scorer in Euro history with his brace against

Hungary

in matchday 1.

Ronaldo stop! He has a family

It seems like running 97 meters with a top speed of 19mph wasn’t satisfactory enough for Cristiano Ronaldo and he wanted to make the headlines by showing his other talents as well. And show his talents he did! The Portugal international tried and successfully pulled off a sweet stunt in the already intense and thrilling match between Portugal and

Germany

as his outrageous piece of skill made everyone lose their minds.

Ronaldo easily clipped the ball over German defender Antonio Rudiger’s head, then went on to pretend to catch the ball with his hands while the ball was still in the air, before finally passing the ball in a brilliant no-look fashion while Rudiger seemed to have been lost between all these flicks and tricks that were up Ronaldo’s sleeves.

Football fans went absolutely wild over the attempted skill by Cristiano, as many on Twitter reacted over what they had just seen, with many dubbing the Juventus man as “unreal” as one Twitter user commented: “Ronaldo stop! He has a family.”

It seems that Rudiger got the last laugh of course, as Germany went on to absolutely batter their opposition with a 4-2 win, with two of Germany’s goals coming from two separate own goals by Portugal defenders. At least Cristiano Ronaldo got the publicity he wanted.

Barcelona’s summer overhaul

Barcelona

are enjoying their summer transfer window and it seems that nothing is going to stop the Blaugrana from signing more and more strikers. Ronald Koeman already had Antoine Griezmann, Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi in his roster, but it seems that these world-class forwards weren’t satisfactory enough for the club as they have signed yet another world-class talent. It was announced yesterday that the Catalans have signed Memphis Depay on a free transfer until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Their summer overhaul seems to be going great as they’ve spent nearly nothing to bring in two of the best strikers in the world. The 27-year-old center forward has a market value of €45 million and has already proven himself to be one of the most prolific forwards of his level by scoring a total of 76 goals in 178 appearances for

Olympique Lyon

, while also providing 56 assists as well. He has also added on his CV the names of PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United, which shows that the Dutch forward only plays for the best of the best in the world.

Depay started his illustrious career as a

PSV Eindhoven

academy graduate when he joined the club’s senior side back in 2012. He spent three years at the Dutch club before joining

Manchester United

for €34 million back in 2015. But it didn’t take him long to move out of the club as he was not able to perform at his best during his stay in England. He joined Olympique Lyon for €16 million in 2017 after making only 53 appearances for the Red Devils and only managing to score an abysmal 3 goals in the process.

The overly enthusiastic neutral

It’s an absolutely wild and thrilling feeling to celebrate a goal amongst your teammates or as a supporter of a certain club or country. But it is far better and hilarious when a certain neutral is caught between the celebrating players and their respective fans. That is what happened when a pitch-side reporter was suddenly confronted by Atilla Fiola and his mates as they celebrated their shock lead against France.

The poor reporter had to feign a celebration as she was still in shock after Fiola firmly hit her desk and papers flew up in the air. With well over 60,000 Hungary fans present at the stadium, Fiola and his teammates were simply blinded by joy as they went on to make history with a 1-1 “win” against the 2018 World Cup champions. While the pitch-side reporter was simply surprised by the intensity of Hungary’s celebration, her faced showed that she might have feared for her life for how intense the celebrations actually were in front of her eyes.
