In this post, We’re not only to top La Liga winners but also the teams who have finished as runners-up once, though very briefly. There is also one team on the list who have won one La Liga title but they have never finished as runners-up unlike the other teams on the list.

Which La Liga Team Has Won the Most Titles?

That’s the question!

Which La Liga team has won the most titles

actually? Well, that’s, as you might have guessed, is Real Madrid. But what about the other teams? Stay with us to know.

Real Madrid (34 Titles)

Number one on the list of Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won,

Real Madrid

have won 34 La Liga titles to this date which puts them at the top of the list with a margin of 8 titles from the second place occupied by Barcelona. They have also finished as runners-up in La Liga league competitions 24 times which, this time, is not the highest on the list but the second - the highest belongs to Barcelona.

From among all the 34 La Liga titles Real Madrid have won ten titles in two rows of 5 years, actually from 1960 to 1965 and from 1985 to 1990, have been consecutive. They have also won 19 Copa del Rey trophies, 11 Spanish Super Cups, and two trophies from two discontinued Spanish tournaments, namely Copa Eva Duarte and the Spanish League Cup.

Founded in 1902, just 19 years before the foundation of La Liga itself, Real Madrid are not only a record holder in terms of the number of La Liga titles won but also have one European and two world records to their name. They have won 13 UEFA Champions League titles to this date which no other European team has ever surpassed, in fact, to this date. They have also won 3 Intercontinental Cups in 1960, 1998, and 2002, and 4 FIFA Club World Cups in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 which both are records not yet broken by any other club in the world. Top footballers like Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo,

Gareth Bale

, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, and Sergio Ramos have played sometime during their careers for the top La Liga club - all of them are actually record holders at the club.

Barcelona (26 Titles)

The second Spanish club among

La Liga winners

after Real Madrid with most La Liga titles won, Barcelona have won a total of 26 La Liga titles during their history. And the interesting fact about them is that they have also finished runners-up the same number of times (26) in La Liga league competitions. In fact, if we sorted Spanish clubs based on the number of times they have finished as runners-up in La Liga, then Barcelona would top the list.

Although

Barcelona

are behind Real Madrid concerning the number of La Liga titles they have won, they are in front of the Whites in terms of the trophy-wins records including the number of different domestic cups they have won. While Real Madrid have 4 trophy records to their name, Barcelona have set 7 at domestic and European levels, but actually none at global level - Real Madrid have set 2 records at this level, as mentioned above.

Among the Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won Barcelona are actually the one with most domestic cup wins to their name. They are actually a record holder in terms of the number of Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cups, Copa Eva Duarte, and Spanish League Cups they have won to this date with the number of their wins being 31 - 11 more than Real Madrid, 13, 3, and 2, respectively.

Barcelona’s best shot at consecutive La Liga title wins was between 1990 and 1994 during which they won 4 La Liga titles in a row - in this respect, they are behind Real Madrid who have had two 5-in-a-row La Liga titles wins. And what about Barcelona’s European trophy records? They have actually won 4 UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, 5

UEFA Super Cups

, and 3 Inter-Cities Fairs Cups which no other European team has ever surpassed. They have also won 5 UEFA Champions League titles which is way behind the 13 of the same title Real Madrid have won.

Atletico Madrid (11 Titles)

The third and last club on the list of

Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won

with more than 10 La Liga titles to their name, Atletico Madrid have actually won 11 La Liga titles to this date the most recent of which was the 2020-21 title. Although Atletico Madrid have had two consecutive La Liga titles wins in their history, the row of their wins has not been long, especially in regard to those of Barcelona and Real Madrid. They once won two consecutive La Liga titles in 1939-40 and 1940-41 seasons, and another time in 1949-50 and 1950-51 seasons.

Atletico Madrid

have also finished as runners-up in La Liga league competitions almost the same number as they have actually won the Spanish major league title: 10. And other than the La Liga titles they have won, Atletico Madrid have also won 16 domestic cups including 10 Copa del Rey trophies, 2 Spanish Super Cups, one Spanish Champions Cup in 1940-41 season, one President Cup of the Spanish Football Federation in 1947, and one Copa Eva Duarte in 1951.

And what about Atletico’s international trophies? Well, that’s one European Cup Winners' Cup in 1961-62 season, three UEFA Europa League titles in 2009-10, 2011-12, and 2017-18 seasons, three UEFA Super Cups in 2010, 2012, and 2018, and one Intercontinental Cup in 1974. Atletico Madrid have only been relegated to the second tier of Spanish football league system, known as La Liga 2, twice in their history: Once in 1929-30 and another time in 1999-2000 season.

Athletic Bilbao (8 Titles)

Occupying the fourth position on the list of Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won,

Athletic Bilbao

have won a total of 8 La Liga titles in their history, and from all these 8 titles only two have been consecutive; actually the titles they won in 1929-30 and 1930-31 seasons. They have also finished as runners-up in La Liga league competitions 7 times.

Athletic Bilbao have won no international trophies, but they have won 27 domestic cups which is not bad among top La Liga winners and include 23 Copa del Rey trophies, 3 Spanish Super Cups, and one Copa Eva Duarte. In fact, if we were to sort the list of Spanish football champions based on the number of Copa del Rey trophies they have won, then Athletic Bilbao would come second on the list after Barcelona. That might be interesting for you to know that they won all their 23 Copa del Rey trophies before 1985.

Valencia (6 Titles)

Halfway through the list of

Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won

, we reach another club who, just like Barcelona, have won the same number of La Liga titles as the times they have finished runners-up in the major Spanish league: Valencia. We mean Valencia have actually finished as runners-up in La Liga league competitions 6 times, too.

Valencia

have also won two La Liga 2 titles, 8 Cop del Rey trophies, one Spanish Super Cup, one Copa Eva Duarte, and one President Cup of the Spanish Football Federation in their history. And what about their international trophies? Well, that is one European Cup Winners' Cup in 1979-80 season, one UEFA Cup in 2003-04 season, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1961-62 and 1962-63 seasons, two European Super Cups in 1980 and 2004, and one UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1998.

As you see, Valencia have done much better than Athletic Bilbao in terms of the international trophies they have won, though they are still behind them concerning the number of Copa del Rey trophies won. Since their foundation in 1919, Valencia have spent 84 seasons in La Liga and 4 seasons in La Liga 2.

Real Sociedad (2 Titles)

Another almost-top club on our list of Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won,

Real Sociedad

have won only two La Liga titles in their history and in two consecutive seasons, namely 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons. They have also finished as runners-up three times in La Liga history; actually in 1979-80, 1987-88, and 2002-03 seasons. Real Sociedad have been relegated to La Liga 2 six times during their history and they have won the same league title three times actually in 1948-49, 1966-67, and 2009-10 seasons.

Just Like Athletic Bilaboa, Real Sociedad have also no international trophy to their name, but they have won 10 domestic trophies including 3 Copa del Rey trophies, one Spanish Super Cup, actually in 1982, and 6 Gipuzkoa Championship - a competition held between Spanish club from 1918 to 1940 - titles. Since their foundation in 1909, Real Sociedad have spent 74 seasons in La Liga and 16 season in La Liga 2. Top footballers like

Antoine Griezmann

and Claudio Bravo have played sometime during their careers for Real Sociedad.

Deportivo La Coruna (1 Title)

The only club on the list of Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won who are not currently competing in La Liga 1,

Deportivo La Coruna

have only one La Liga title to their name; actually the La Liga title they won in 1999-2000 season. They have also finished as runners-up five times in the same league. Deportivo La Coruna along with Real Betis are the only two clubs on the list of Spanish football champions who have also competed in La Liga 2 Division B and Tercera Division, the fourth tier of the Spanish football league system.

Deportivo La Coruna have actually been relegated to

La Liga 2

eleven times and have won 5 La Liga 2 titles, too, since 1929 with the most recent of which being the title they won in 2011-12 season. They have also finished 5 times as runners-up in the same league. Currently competing in La Liga 2 Division B which is the third tier of Spanish football league system, Deportivo were also relegated once to the fourth tier of Spanish football, Tercera Division, in 1973-74 season where they stayed for one season before they were promoted again to La Liga 2 Divison B in the next season.

Despite not as big as a name as the clubs that top the

list of Spanish football champions

, Deportivo La Coruna have also won two Copa del Rey trophies, actually in 1994-95 and 2001-02 seasons, and three Spanish Super Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2002. They have also won one Spanish Cup - Copa Espana which is actually an earlier version of Copa del Rey - in 1912 and one UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2008.

Sevilla (1 Title)

Another almost-top club on the list of Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won,

Sevilla

have won only one La Liga title during their history, however, they are not only the winner of several editions of regional and friendly tournaments but also have won UEFA Europa League title 6 times from 2005 to 2020 which is a record not yet broken by any other team in the world. And not only this, Sevilla were also named the best team in the world by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) in 2006 and 2007.

Other than the La Liga title Sevilla won in 1945-46 season, they have won five

Copa del Rey

trophies and one Spanish Super Cup in 2007. They have also won four La Liga 2 titles which means they have been relegated the same number of times from La Liga, though one of their La Liga 2 title wins - their 1929 title win - actually didn’t win them promotion to La Liga since La Liga was just founded at the time and the teams to compete in it were chosen from among the teams who had won at least one Copa del Rey or had finished as runners-up in the same competition which Sevilla was not among them.

Sevilla have also won one UEFA Super Cup in 2006, 18 Copa Andalucia - a regional tournament - trophies, and 41 friendly tournaments trophies including 6 Antonio Puerta, 6 Ramón de Carranza, and 4 Teresa Herrera trophies. Again in La Liga, they have finished as runners-up 4 times and also in Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup 4 and 3 times respectively.

Real Betis (1 Title)

And here comes the last club with one La Liga title and also the only club on the list of

Spanish clubs with most La Liga titles won

who have won a La Liga title but have never finished as runners-up in the same competition: Real Betis. Although Real Betis have never finished as runners-up in La Liga, they have done so in any other competition they have taken part in including the Spanish Super Cup that they only finished as runners-up in once in 2005.

Real Betis

have also won 2 Copa del Rey trophies, seven La Liga 2 titles, one Tercera Division - the fourth tier of Spanish football league system - title and one regional discontinued cup, namely Copa de Andalucia, during their history. And as runners-up? Just like Sevilla, Real Betis have also been relegated to La Liga 2 and Tercera Division eleven times and once, respectively, during their history, however, they spent more time in the fourth tier than Sevilla; actually for seven years between 1947 and 1954. All in all, Real Betis have spent 55 seasons in La Liga, 25 seasons in La Liga 2, and 7 seasons in Tercera Division.

Spanish Clubs With No La Liga Title But One Runners-up Winner

They are Racing Santander, Las Palmas, Real Zaragoza, Sporting Gijon, and

Villarreal

. All these clubs have finished runners-up once in La Liga with Villarreal being the most recent one having finished runners-up in the major Spanish league in 2007-08 season. In fact, the only club currently competing in La Liga among the clubs mentioned above is Villarreal with their last promotion to La Liga being in 2012-13 season where they finished 2nd in La Liga 2. They have also done great in La Liga since then ending the season in one of the 7 top positions of the league table, indeed, except for 2018-19 season that they finished 14th.
