A look at the chances of the top teams in the new Italian Serie A season to not only see who will win the Serie A title in 2021, but to determine which teams will secure UCL and Europa League qualification.
The 2020-21 ItalianSerie A
season is among the most unusual seasons in the history of Italy's domestic football. For most of the season, there seemed to be no superior side among the top teams and After 9 years of absolute dominance from Juventus, this year they are not the favorites to win the Serie A title.
There were two main decisive factors behind the changes of the scenario. First, due to COVID-19 Pandemic, football was suspended for more than three months. As a result, the 2019-20 season continued until the middle of July 2020 and at the end Juventus won the title for the ninth consecutive time.
The Second factor was the participation of Italian top teams in the final stages of the European competitions which continued until the middle of August 2020. The giants of Serie A had considerable less time for the necessary pre-season preparations and the new Serie A season started only a month after the end of last season's European competitions.
The heavy schedule has had its toll on players around the world and the big teams have faced injury crisis and dips in form from early weeks of the new season. On the other hand, the usual underdogs, have had more rest and preparation in the summer than the usual favorites. So they have been more prepared throughout the season to shock the traditional title contenders.
28 weeks of the Serie A season has passed and with 10 weeks remaining, Inter Milan is leading the table with 20 points from 27 games. Their city rivals, AC Milan was the leader of the table for most of the season, but Pioli's men eventually stumbled and gave Inter the chance to seal the top spot.
Meanwhile, the defending Champions, Juventus are third after gathering 16 points from 27 games. However, it is certainly too soon to write them off completely when it comes to predicting
who will win the Serie A title in 2021
Among the top team who have not enjoyed the best of forms are Roman and Lazio which are at sixth and seventh spot respectively. They can no longer dream of winning the title, but they are in the race for the Champions league spot.
And at the end it is fair to mentionSassuolo
who has been the surprise of Serie A in the past two seasons. Roberto di Zerbi players were amazing in the 2019-20 Serie A season as they ended their campaign at the 8th place. This season, they are at the same place with 39 points from 27 games, but have no chance of going any further up the table as they are 10 points away from Lazio at seven.
In the following article we will look into the current form of the top teams of the 2020-21 Serie A season to try to see
who will win the Italian Serie A title this year?
We will also predict which teams will seal the UCL and Europa League qualification.
AS Roma is another team which can be considered as a traditional title challengers, although they have no chance this term when it comes to guessing who will win the Serie A title in 2021.
AS Roma finished last season at fifth place and qualified for the Europa League. They topped their group in Europe and eliminated Braga in the last 32. Paulo Fonseca's players have been in a good form this season and are occupying the sixth place with 50 points from 28 games.
Roma started the new Serie A season with a shocking 3-0 loss at Hellas Verona which was followed by an entertaining 2-2 draw against Juventus. After that loss their started a run of five wins in their next six games, the best of them a 5-2 win at home against Benevento.
Roma's French midfielder, Jordan Veretout has been the team's best player this season after scoring 10 goals in 28 games. The Armenian midfielder, Henrik Mikhitarian has scored 9 goals and their veteran striker, Edin Dzeko has scored 7 goals so far into the season.
Having said all that, would you give them a chance when it comes to guessing
who will win the Serie A in 2021?
It seems almost impossible for them achieve such a feat. They are entering the last quarter of the season in a bad form after suffering from 3 defeats in their last 5 matches. Our guess is they will finish the season at the seventh place.
Genaro Gattuso's Napoli side is another team we analyze in our article on who will win the Italian Serie A title this year. Napoli finished at the eighth spot last season, 21 points away from Champion's Juventus, but have done better this season as they are at the fifth place with 53 games from 27 games.
Napoli started the new Serie A season with four wins in their first six games, the best of them a 6-0 win against Genova in match day second. What's interesting about Napoli's performances this season is that they are the only team of the table with the least draws (2). They have won 17 games and have lost 8 games. Their worst defeat so far was a 3-0 loss against Juventus in match day 3.
Napoli has lost five out of the 6 games they have played against their direct rivals (Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Sassuolo) and this could prove costly at the end of the season. They still have to face Juventus, Inter Milan and AS Roma in the remaining weeks. Lorenzo Insignie has been Napoli's best player this term with 12 goals in 27 matches while Herwing Lozano and Dris Mertens have scored 9 and 7 goals respectively.
Considering their inconsistency in the last few seasons, they don’t seem to have any chance when it comes to decide who will win the Serie A title in 2021. Our guess? They may be a force to reckon with in the Serie A but more than three decades has passed since their last La Liga title. They will finish the league at the sixth place.
Lazio is one of the traditional title challengers of the Italian Serie A, but this season they have no chance when it comes to guessing who will win the Serie A title in 2021.
Biancocelesti finished last season at the fourth place and qualified for the 20-21 Champions League. However, it had a bitter taste for their fans since they were in the title race up until the restart of the Serie A after three months of suspension due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Lazio was poor in their last ten games of the campaign and was in the danger of losing the final UCL spot to AC Milan. They still managed to end the season among the top four, but who knows how far they could go if they didn't lose their form in the latter stages of the season.
Lazio started the new Serie A season with 4-1 loss to Atalanta. Their best game so far was probably the 4-3 away win against Torino. Their best run this season was a six game winning streak from weak 16 to 21. They also had a successful UCL campaign and qualified from their group before being eliminated against defending Champions, Bayern Munich in the last 16.
Just like last season, Ciro Immobile has been Lazio's best player this term. The veteran forward won the Serie A top scorer award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and the European golden shoe award ahead of Robert Lewandowsky. So far, Immobile has scored 14 goals in 27 games for Lazio and seems far away from retirement. Luis Alberto is Lazio's second best goal scorer with 8.
How much of chance Lazio has in our topic,
who is going to win the Serie A title 2020-2021?
They don’t have any chance to win the title this year and they missed out on it with a better squad last season. However, they can still reach the Champions League and Europa League spots. Lazio sits at the seventh place having earned 49 points from 27 games. Our guess is they will finish the season at the fifth place and will play at the Europa League next season.
The next team in our article on w
ho will win the Serie A title this year
is Manu Gasprini's spirited Atalanta side. Atalanta had a hugely successful campaign in the 2019-20 season, in which they reached the quarter finals of the Champions League, only to be eliminated by an injury time goal against Paris saint Germaine. They were also one of the best teams in Serie A and finished the season at the third place, only 5 points behind the champions, Juventus.
This season, Atalanta has been as impressive as last season. They qualified for the knock out stage behind Liverpool and ahead of Ajax Amsterdam. They were eventually eliminated in the last 16 though against Real Madrid. That will not stop them from dreaming of another run at the Europe's most prestigious competition as they are sitting at the fourth place with 55 points from 28 games.
Atalanta started the season in an erratic fashion. They had three huge consecutive wins in their first three games as they beat Lazio 4-1, Torino 4-2 and Cagliari 5-2, but a run of only 1 win in their next 7 matches costed them greatly. Their worst defeat so far was a 4-1 defeat away at Napoli which started their dip in form.
Despite their dip in form in the start of the season, Atalanta has been superb in 2021. They are entering the final stages of their campaign with a run of seven wins and one loss in their last 8 games. Their only loss was by one goal to nil against Inter Milan. Luis Morielle and Duan Zapata have been Atalanta's best player so far this season with 16 and 10 goals respectively.
Considering their remaining games, do they have a chance when you think of who will win the Serie A title in 2020-2021? They have certainly justified their spot among Serie A best teams but they still lack the experience and the consistency which are the characteristics of the Champions. They still have to face Juventus and have harder games than their rivals. Our guess is they will finish at the fourth place and will play at the Champions League next season.
Despite their uncharacteristically bad start to the new season, Juventus has always been among the favorites to win the title. They have won the Serie A title nine times in a row and it seems only Inter Milan can match the quality of their squad. So you can never write them off when thinking of who will win the Serie A title this year.
Bianconeri is entering the final stage of the title race in their worst crisis since the start of the season. They are currently at the fourth place in the league after gaining 50 points in 27 games, but they are level with Atalanta at third and have a game at hand. But a 1-0 loss against Benevento and their elimination from the Champions League last 16 have put the team in a crisis as the future of Cristiano Ronaldo at the club seems far away from certain, with the Portuguese superstar keen on a move away from Turin at the end of the season.
Juventus were emphatic as usual in the Champions' League group stage. They won all their games except for the 2-0 home defeat against Barcelona. A defeat they took revenge for as they topped their group with a Ronaldo-inspired 3-0 win at Barcelona. However, they were poor in the last 16 and was eliminated against FC Porto by the away goal rule after a thrilling 4-4 draw.
Despite being 36, Cristiano Ronaldo has been Juventus's best player so far. He is the league's top scorer with 23 goals in 27 matches. Juventus second best scorer in the league is Alvaro Morata with 7 goals and it shows a lot about the importance of Ronaldo for the defending champions.
Juventus have the best defensive record in the table after conceding only 23 goals so far into the season. they are 10 points behind leaders Inter Milan and It will be a daunting task for Andrea Pirlo to guide the Bianconeri to Serie A glory in his managerial debut season. However, they have the UCL's best goal scorer ever and five time Ballon d'Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo to guide them on their way.
Mathematically, the Old Lady can still win the title for the tenth time in a row, but they have to higher their level dramatically if they want to accomplish this feat. Our guess is that their run of title winnings will come to an end and they will finish at the third place. Pirlo and Ronaldo will leave the club at the end of the season and a new era will begin for the team.
Milan is one of the most successful teams in the history of Serie A. They have won the title 18 times, but their last triumph goes back to the 2010-11 season. They are the last team to win the title before Juventus's hegemony.
No one, not even Milan fans were hoping that their team would be among the title challengers at this point of the season. However with the guidance of their popular coach, Stefano Pioli and the brilliance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the field, they are currently at the second place with 59 points from 28 games.
Milan was the champions of the first half of the season. They were the leaders for the majority of the campaign but suffered greatly from injuries to their best players. They eventually lost their place after a run of 5 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses in their last 10 games.
Milan's best result so far was their 3-1 win against Napoli, while their worst defeat was the 3-0 loss in the Milan derby against Inter.
Milan has the third best offensive record in the league with 53 goals scored in 28 games. The 39 years old Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been Rossoneri's best player so far with 15 goals. He has missed several games due to injury and it has costed the team greatly.
Pioli's players can still win the title, but have a very hard task of reaching the top again considering the form Inter Milan is having. Our guess is they will finish as the runners-up. Whatever happens, this Milan side has shown that the future is bright for them.
Inter Milan is the last team which can be considered as title challengers when it comes to guessing
who will win the Serie A title in 2021
The Nerazzuri were one of the best teams of the 2019-20 Serie A season as they finished as the runners up, only one point behind Juventus. The core of the team has not changed much since last season. Their Belgian striker, Romelu Lukaku was among the top scorers of Serie A last season. A form he has replicated in the current season with 19 goals in 28 games. Lukaku's partner in the final third of the pitch, Lautaro Martinez has also been in a good form as he has scored 14 goals so far into the season.
Inter Milan started the season with two huge wins (5-2 against Verona and 4-3 against Fiorentina). A run of one win, three draws and one loss (2-1 against AC Milan) in their next five games seemed to hamper their chances of challenging the title. However, Antonio Conte's men successfully turned the tide and won all of their next six games, the best of them a 3-0 win against Sassuolo.
Inter are entering the final stage of the title race in an impressive 8 games winning streak. They have suffered only one loss and 2 draws in their last 23 League games and are clear favorites for the title.
Inter Milan is at the top of the table with 65 points from 27 games, 6 points ahead of their city rivals, AC Milan and with a game in hand. If they continue to perform the way they did in the last two months, they can surely win their first Serie A title in ten years. As for the question of
