Sardar Azmoun early life

Despite the fact that he is only 26 years old, Sardar Azmoun has already accomplished a great deal as he enters his prime years. After scoring over a goal per game for Iran's youth teams, he has already racked up 32 goals in just 52 senior matches after being handed his debut by Carlos Quieroz at the age of 19.

He won the domestic treble of the RPL title, Russian Cup, and Russian Super Cup in his first full season at Zenit St. Petersburg. He had only scored less than a goal every three games prior to donning the Blue-White-Sky Blue shirt for the first time in January 2019.

Despite never having played in a senior match, he left his homeland as a teenager to join Rubin Kazan, despite interest from a few European clubs. His football career began nearly a decade ago when a family vacation to Turkmenistan to visit relatives convinced him that football was made for him.

He told Match TV shortly after joining Zenit that despite having played the game before, it was then that he realized he had a special talent.

If he had made a different decision a few years later, he might never have become a footballer. His father and sister were both international volleyball players, and his mother was a professional volleyball coach. Sardar was naturally drawn to the sport and was even called up to the Iran under-15 national team, but he had to choose which sport to devote his time to.

Azmoun was taken on a pre-season friendly tour to

Turkey

after joining Sepahan's youth setup in 2010. This was in recognition of his performances for his age-group national side. He never played in the first team, however, as the club went on to win the Iranian championship the following season. In 2013, he chose to continue his education under Kurban Berdyev, a man with Turkmen ancestry with whom he developed a strong bond.

In the 2016-17 season, he made his Champions League debut on loan at Rostov, scoring against Atletico Madrid and in the famous 3-2 home win over

Bayern Munich

under Berdyev's tutelage. Three years prior, he had scored his first European goal for Rubin in a Europa League qualifier, also under Berdyev's tutelage.

Despite this European recognition, his best goal season was in Rostov's Champions League season, when he scored 12 goals in all competitions; prior to moving to St. Petersburg, he had only 42 club goals in 154 games. He has nearly doubled that since then, scoring 39 goals in only 64 appearances for Zenit.
