Steven Alzate (born 8 September 1998) is a British-Colombian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club

Brighton & Hove Albion

and Colombia at the international level.

Steven Alzate is a 23-year-old talent who’s already playing at Brighton & Hove Albion’s senior team but he had to go through a lot to get where he is right now. His footballing journey, however, started at Leyton Orient. Back then, the youngster was still playing his football for the Football League’s U18 squad but found himself progressing quite quickly.

Prior to Brighton, the Colombia national team player was part of the Leighton Orient team, where hard work led him to play in the last game of the main team in February 2017.

He was sent on loan to Swindon for one season in 2018, which ended due to a premature injury. Since then Alzate has cautiously, but steadily, made his way through the first-team plans at Brighton.

The man who brought Alzate into the national set-up was Carlos Queiroz - Sir Alex Ferguson's right-hand man over two spells. Queiroz worked as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at

Manchester United

during the 2002/03 season and returned in 2004, before finally leaving again in 2008 to pursue head coach roles.

Queiroz was 'excited' about Alzate in an interview in 2019 and included him on the national side as a result of his qualities, despite being so young. There are still lots of stories reminding us how poor footballers can be, but Alzate has a smart head on young shoulders.

Brighton & Hove Albion

On 31 July 2017, Alzate signed for Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed fee. Alzate made his debut for The Seagulls in the EFL Cup on 27 August 2019 where he played the full match in the 2–1 away win against Bristol Rovers. Alzate was named on the bench in a Premier League fixture for the first time in a 1–1 home draw against Burnley on 14 September.

He remained an unused substitute. Alzate made his Premier League and league debut for Brighton on 21 September playing the full match in the 0–0 draw at Newcastle. He made his home debut on 5 October where he started the match against Tottenham Hotspur, which ended in a 3–0 victory.

Alzate scored his first Albion goal on 23 January 2021, deflecting an Alexis Mac Allister shot in the back of the net in a 2–1 home win over Blackpool in the FA Cup fourth round, a match where he also registered an assist for Yves Bissouma's 30 yard stunner.

On 3 February 2021, Alzate scored his first Premier League goal to secure a 1–0 away win over Liverpool, sealing Brighton's first win at Anfield in Premier League history and their first league win at Liverpool since 1982.

Swindon Town (loan)

On 2 July 2018, Alzate joined League Two side Swindon Town on a season-long loan. His first goal for the club came on 22 September, against Yeovil Town, when he scored with a 20-yard strike. On 1 January 2019, Alzate was ruled out for at least three months after he was diagnosed with a fracture to his back. The loan deal expired on 9 January, and Alzate returned to Brighton.

Steven Alzate International career

On 6 November 2019, Alzate got his first call-up to the Colombia national team for friendlies against Peru and Ecuador in November 2019.

He made his debut on 16 November coming on as a substitute in a 1–0 home victory over Peru. 5 days later he made his first appearance for Colombia in the 1–0 away win against Ecuador where he was highly praised by manager Carlos Queiroz. He has had his chance to impress the former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

Queiroz was keen to to take a closer look at the attacking midfielder who has made just five Premier League appearances. Alzate, who was from London and born to Colombian parents, had been selected as part of an initial 34-man squad for the friendlies against Peru on November 15 and Ecuador on November 19, to be played in Miami and New Jersey.

Steven Alzate Style of play

Alzate is capable of being deployed in a variety of positions which is what makes him an asset to Potter's setup. A midfielder Alzate's quality indicate that he is still more than capable of playing as a full-back - which Potter has utilised him as recently. Alzate is relaxed on the ball and offers calmness and quality to someone above his years.

He has averaged one key pass and one successful dribble per game during his limited league appearances. Although this statistic may not indicate that Alzate will have a good future, he has shown that he will be a great player in the future. Young players always need patience because they adapt to the demands of adult football and even the best players are in good shape.

He also has the confidence to take his player on while one-on-one. It's a bit of nightmare for defenders when he goes at speed and can go any direction. On one occasion against Everton he had the full back isolated, cut inside and his shot narrowly rose over the bar.

Neal Maupay gave him the stern, "I was open" look so it's good to see Alzate has the confidence and his tendency is still to turn and attack. He is versatile in all positions and has played wing-back, right, left, and central midfield - even in the same match.

Having seen each of his Premier League displays for Albion, youDan Burn,s header that hit the crossbar, when the score was 1-0, all resulted from an incisive and creative pass from Alzate that penetrated the defense.

Against Spurs he was outstanding and several people, including me, were shocked to see him dropped at Aston Villa. When he did join at Villa Park, Albion were down to 10-men and holding on for a draw. get the feeling he will fit straight in.

On his debut at Newcastle, he was man-of-match, while at Chelsea - in Brighton's worst performance of the season - Alzate was their best player. In the second half, he was the one prepared to take the ball on the turn and run at defenders in an attempt to create an opening.

Even though they lost, his performance was great. Alzate was recalled for Everton and he stood up to a more robust and physical challenge. When the game did open up, he displayed the quality and skills to cause problems.
