All You Need to Know about Tottenham History

In 1882, a group of schoolboys formed a club named "Hotspur Football Club," which two years later, it changed to "Tottenham Hotspur Club." The young boys were between 13 and 14, from Hon's Middle Class and Tottenham school, playing for the Hotspur Cricket Club.

The idea of making a football club came from the three schoolboys, Robert Buckle, Sam Casey, and John Anderson, who were looking for a way to be able to play sports in the winter months. Based on Club Lore states, finally, while one night they were under a lamppost on Tottenham High Road agreed to start the club, which set the start point of Tottenham history.

They followed their agreement and based the club on 5 September 1882, which included eighteen members at the end of the year. Among the mentioned names, such as Northumberland Rovers, they preferred Hotspur, which came from the rebel's name of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Harry Hotspur. Not having enough investment had made them hold their meeting in half-built houses or Northumberland Park.

The situation caused the schoolboys to ask for assistance from John Risher, the Bible-class teacher and warden of Tottenham YMCA, who later became the first club's president and its treasure. He continued his role till 1894, and by reorganizing the club and establishing a list of ethos for it supported the boys.

One of the significant features that most clubs need to have, especially in their early years, is having stability, which John Risher could earn for the club in its early years, though they did not have in many other periods. Finally, in 1935, 784 Tottenham High Road became the club's official address.

Following the letters of another London club, named Hotspur, the boys renamed the club and changed it to

Tottenham Hotspur

Football Club to avoid any ambiguity. However, these days the club is commonly famous as Spurs or Tottenham. However, in early 1883, press reports referred to them as "Spurs" and "the Lilywhites" after being seen with their white jersey.

According to

Tottenham history

, the club passed about 13 years in as an initially amateur and finally in 1895 turned to a professional one. Tottenham was the only non-League club since Football League formation could win the FA Cup. It seemed that the club had started the success path because, after that, they won several notable achievements, including winning seven FA Cup, two Football League, and four League Cup, two UEFA Cup.

Finally, the awards caused the club to become the first team in the 20th century to perform The Double. These are the reasons which show how Tottenham turned from an amateur level to a professional one.

In the years between 1896 and 1908, Tottenham took part in the Southern League and then enhanced to the First Division. The early 1970s coincided with a period in which Tottenham dipped, though the club resurged in the following decade, and in 1992 became a founding member of the Premier League.

However, after the war, the Spurs resumed the football league and continued their former brilliant plays. In 1921, McWilliam, the new manager, made a glorious period in Tottenham history because it could play brilliantly, but the club relegated when McWilliam left it.

Afterward, Pochettino left the club, and Jose Mourinho was appointed instead.

Like many other clubs that have changed their jersey during the time, there are some different colors and models of kit behind

Tottenham kit history

. The first model was a navy blue shirt designed with the letter "H" on a scarlet shield placed on the left breast and a pair of white breeches.

One year later, in 1884 or 1885, watching

Blackburn Rovers

' won in the 1884 FA Cup Final stimulate them to change their kit to a quartered jersey similar to Rovers. From then to 1890, several changes happened in Tottenham jersey history, including returning to a navy blue shirt, red shirt and blue shorts, and chocolate and gold striped kit.

During the 1898-99 season, the club changed its jersey color to white shirts and blue shorts, the colors which were similar to

Preston North End

. Though they had switched their kit colors several times, they had selected white and navy as their original colors, which caused them to be called "The Lilywhites."

Having won the FA Cup in 1921, Tottenham added some details to its kit, such as the cockerel badge to the shirts and numbers on shirts back. In addition to colors,

Tottenham jersey history

has experienced several suppliers, and the first ones were local outfitters.

Having passed a long list of changes, the Spurs chose their home jersey in white shirts, deep blue shorts, and white socks. The V-neck collar and sleeves of their shirts are with blue trim. Also, the engraved word "Spurs" in a detailed manner is apparent within it. One of the other details regarding the Tottenham kit is their motto, "To Dare Is To Do," imprinted inside the shirts.

The club's away kit colors are a combination of "Black, Black, and Venom Green," which show most elements are in black. Following the purple jersey in 2017-18, the green one in 2018-19, and the blue kit in 2019-2020, Tottenham Hotspur revealed its new 2020-2021 third jersey, which is in yellow.

Tottenham Logo History

As one of the most venerable and oldest clubs amongst the English ones, Tottenham Hotspur has a rich history and has passed many redesigns in its visual identity. After its establishment in 1882, Tottenham has used numerous badges of spurs as its logo, though its first official one appeared in the early 1920s.

The first logo contained a bird, which was the club's symbol, which during the 139 years of the club's life, it has redesigned many times. Various designs contained a story, which in this section, we have presented

Tottenham logo history

and all related details and stories to it.

The first period of Tottenham badge history comes back to years between 1921 and 1951 that the logo design was a solid and strong cock, surrounded in a frame. Though there were no many details in the blue and white logo, it looked so stylish and lasted for thirty years, and no changes happened to it during the period.

The new image was not so different from the previous version because there was only a cockerel instead of the cock in the same pattern and color. Additionally, the shield and framing of it were as same as the prior model. So, the only difference between the new logo and the earlier one was on the mascot.

However, in years from 1967 to 1983, a completely new image appeared contained a cockerel standing on a blue ball, and no framing was around it. The late decoration with delicate accents had earned a balance to it. The next logo goes back to years from 1983 to 1995, considered one of the most stylish images in

Tottenham badge history

.

The same cockerel in white and blue contouring, a circle in an elegant monogram, and two wild lions in red around the medallion sides are the differences that had happened to the new version.

One of the other notable details in the logo was a yellow ribbon which showed the club's slogan, "Audere Est Facere." However, the detailed image did not last after 1995, and since then, it got simplified and turned back to the former blue cockerel sign on the monogram, surrounded by an outline.

The image, rooted in some of older versions of the club's logos, did not last very much and only stayed for about two years as the Tottenham Hotspur's logo. In 1997, when the club showed its new badge, it became the most colorful and brightest image because it contained a Royal blue crest encircled in a yellow margin, a blue and white cockerel standing on a brown ball. Besides, there is a brown castle and seven green trees on both sides of the cockerel.

At the bottom part of the logo, the club's monogram with two linos in its aside dazzles the eyes. Also, the blue ribbon under the shield depicts the club's motto in yellow letters and outlines. Though the mentioned image had many details and was glorious, in 1999, the club decided to change it back to the model of 1983.

Using the same composition and color palette made many similarities between the presented logo in 1999 and the image in 1983. There were only slight differences in the contours and lines. Finally, in 2006, the club exposed a logo that has become its official image from 2006 to now.

The current badge depicts a blue cockerel with a white head standing on a blue ball, decorated with a small white stitch. As you read above, all logos had one mascot in common, and that was a cockerel. The club has kept the symbol in its badge because there is a belief that Harry Hotspur was interested in fighting cock, considered a popular sport at the time.

Tottenham mascot history

comes back to the cockerel, which has always been the fixed part of Tottenham's logo of all time. The mascots, Chirpy the Cockerel, cheer the kids up before starting the matches at Wembley. His partner is Spurs Lily, which is probably a female chicken. Despite the high-level reputation of Chirpy, there are a bit facts about him.

Tottenham Stadiums

Before going through the history of

Tottenham stadiums

, we categorized it into three parts, early ground, planning-construction, and opening. Having established in 1882, Tottenham played its early matches at Tottenham Marshes.

By increasing the number of spectators and becoming more popular in the football world, they moved to an enclosed ground. However, due to the reduction of stadium capacity and, on the contrary, increasing in the number of Tottenham's fans, the club had to move to a more suitable ground.

Amongst the offers about the club's problem with stadiums, the idea of rebuilding the East Stands as a three-tier structure and moving to several stadiums, including Picketts Lock and the Olympic Stadium, failed, and the club decided to redevelop their site, which later became the Northumberland Development Project.

After passing the phases of planning and construction of the project, the club announced holding four test appearances in September 2018, the first two of them were for the club staff and officials, and the next two others were open to all fans of the football world.

However, some issues about the faulty electrical wiring postponed the events to a later time. Finally, on 24 March, the stadium became the host of a game between two clubs, Tottenham and Southampton, which 28,987 fans had attended to see the match.

One notable point about the architecture and facilities of the club is. It is a big stadium with a large amount of capacity that accommodates 62,303 fans. The club's need to maximize the hospitality facilities caused the architectures to choose its design as an asymmetric bowl, which the bowl shape could meet it.

A single-tier stand in the south of the stadium caused the structure to get an asymmetry form. There is a horseshoe-shaped part on the northern section, located above the basement, which contains nine floors. Also, there are five floors in the south of the stadium, which the gross internal area is around 119,945 m2.

One of the interesting points regarding the building's appearance is the use of various materials in one structure, such as cladding of glass, metal panels, and pre-cast concrete.
