Georginio Wijnaldum profile

At the beginning of January 2007, Wijnaldum was a member of the second team, but he was allowed to join the first of Feyenoord at training camp in Turkey and to participate in the EFES Pilsen Cup .

He was added to the line-up of the first team for the league match in which Feyenoord played against FC Groningen on 7 April 2007 because Royston Drenthe and Danny Buijs were suspended and Sebastián Pardo , Theo Lucius were injured . At that time, the turning point in

Georginio Wijnaldum biography

occurred.

He made his debut in the Eredivisie on April 8, 2007 under coach Erwin Koeman. This match ended in 0-4 victory for FC Groningen. At the age of 16 years and 148 days, he was the youngest player ever in Feyenoord. After this game, he was allowed to remain with the first team for the rest of the season. Due to his good performances in a period in which Feyenoord as a whole performed poorly, he came to the attention of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton, among others.

While he had a excellent debut year at Feyenoord, the 2009/10 season started in the worst conditions. Wijnaldum was injured at the start of the season and did not return to the starting team of the new coach Mario Been after his recovery. Due to suspensions of Sekou Cissé and Jon Dahl Tomasson , Wijnaldum got another chance after a few games.

In 2010, Wijnaldum's name was included in the world top hundred of great talents. This list, published by the Spanish magazine Don Balón, contains a collection of the world's greatest talents of the moment. This list also included footballers such as Mario Balotelli, Alexandre Pato, Theo Walcott and the Dutch Luc Castaignos and Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

On July 4 2011, PSV reached an agreement with Feyenoord, after FC Twente had also shown interest in Wijnaldum. The transfer would involve an amount of approximately 5 million Euros. On his farewell, Wijnaldum donated a substantial amount to the Friends of Feyenoord to support the youth academy at Sport complex Varkenoord , as an appreciation for the education received. At the press presentation he appeared with his grandmother, who showed Wijnaldum's away shirt.

Wijnaldum made his debut on Thursday 7 July in the PSV shirt during a friendly match against FC Eindhoven . He came onto the pitch in the second half and his team won 2-1. On Wednesday, July 27, he scored his first goal in a match against Nottingham Forest .

Wijnaldum scored twice that game. On Sunday August 7, 2011, Wijnaldum made his league debut for PSV at AZ in a 3-1 defeat. Exactly two weeks later he made his first goal in Eindhoven shirt. At an away match against ADO Den Haag , he made it 0–2 for PSV in a match they won 0–3. Four days later he also made his first PSV goal at a European competition in a match they won 5–0 against SV Ried in which PSV qualified for the Europa League and  Georginio Wijnaldum scored the third goal.

In his first year at PSV, Georginio Wijnaldum played almost in all of the matches. In spite of his dissatisfaction, he usually played as a right winger, as his favorite position behind the strikers was often occupied by Ola Toivonen.

In his second season Dick Advocaat indicated that he mainly wanted to use Wijnaldum for his favorite position behind the striker and that he had to compete with Toivonen here.

At the start of the season, however, the preference of Advocaat turned out to choose Toivonen, while the newly arrived Luciano Narsingh took the position on the right wing. Wijnaldum ended the season on the bench. Everything changed for him when Toivonen suffered a serious injury with the Sweden national football team in October and Georginio Wijnaldum played for the rest of the season.

At the start of the 2013/14 season , new head coach Phillip Cocu announced that Wijnaldum was currently preferred to Toivonen in midfield and that he had appointed him as the captain. Shortly after the start of the competition, he suffered a back injury, which left him outside the pitch for a time after six games. Wijnaldum's injury cost him most of the 2013/2014 season, in which he could only play in eleven league games.

After his appearances in the 2014 World Cup, Wijnaldum started the 2014/2015 season fit again. His contract with PSV still ran for one year at that time. He and the club extended his contract in August 2014 until mid-2018. Wijnaldum retained the captaincy and played in all but one league game during the 2014-2015 season.

After playing 31 matches in the Eredivisie, he was certain to win the title with PSV and became champion in the league for the first time in his career. On the last day of play, Wijnaldum scored his fourteenth league goal of the season and equalled his personal record (from both 2011 and 2013). A day later, the daily newspaper De Telegraaf proclaimed him Player of the Year.

Another important turning point in

Georginio Wijnaldum biography

was the moment when he decided to leave his country and continue his professional career in Premier League.  Newcastle United announced in July 2015 that it was interested in Wijnaldum. PSV announced on 11 July 2015 that Georginio Wijnaldum was moving to the English club, where he signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee would be around twenty million Euros and Wijnaldum would earn around five million Euros per year.

At Newcastle United, Wijnaldum met the Dutch Tim Krul , Daryl Janmaat, Vurnon Anita and Siem de Jong . In addition, he met Steve McClaren, who had tried to bring him to FC Twente at an earlier stage . Wijnaldum made his official debut for Newcastle on Sunday, August 9, 2015, as a main player against Southampton in the first week of the Premier League season 2015/16. That day he also scored his first official goal for the club.

He led Newcastle in the 48th minute with a header 2-1. The game ended 2-2. Wijnaldum scored four goals in one match for Newcastle United on October 18, 2015. In a league game at home against Norwich City, the team won 6-2, he scred the 1-0, the 2-1, the 5-2 and the 6-2 goals. Georginio Wijnaldum ended his first year with Newcastle United with relegation to the Championship.

Wijnaldum signed a contract until mid-2021 with Liverpool in July 2016. Liverpool paid about 30 million euros for him to Newcastle United. Jürgen Klopp immediately made him a key player. Wijnaldum made his debut for Liverpool on 14 August 2016, in a 4-3 win against Arsenal .

The eighth match in the Premier League was the first game in which Wijnaldum did not play. He came into action again in the weeks after, but as a substitute. Wijnaldum scored his first goal for Liverpool in the match against Watford. He came in instead of Sadio Mané in the 63rd minute and made it 6-1 in the 91st minute.

That gave him a key role at Liverpool again and scored again on New Year's Eve against Manchester City. His goal in the 8th minute was the only goal in the match. He also scored on the last day of January against champions Chelsea .

Wijnaldum also scored the decisive goal against Arsenal (3-1) and a week later at Anfield against Burnley which ended in Liverpool’s winning with the result of 2-1. Wijnaldum also made the opening goal against Middlesbrough on the final day of the season.

Georginio Wijnaldum made his Champions League debut for Liverpool in the 2017/18 season, on 13 September 13 2017. On that match day, they played against Sevilla FC which ended with a 2-2 draw. This was Liverpool's first participation in the tournament since the 2014/15 season.

Liverpool finally reached to the final for the first time since 2006/07. Georginio Wijnaldum scored in the semi-final against AS Roma. They lost in the final against Real Madrid 3-1.

Wijnaldum reached the final of the Champions League with Liverpool for the second year in a row in the 2018/19 season. He played a crucial role for in the 4-0 home win in the semi-final against FC Barcelona scoring two goals. This result was just enough for them to reach to the final after the first leg where they lost 3-0 in Spain. This time Liverpool won the final by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0. Georginio Wijnaldum played a vital role in the match.

In the 2019/20 season , Wijnaldum had a permanent base again. Despite a 3-month competition stop due to the covid-19 virus, Liverpool became the champion of the Premier League in England after 31 league matches. On June 25, 2020, Liverpool won the English national championship for the 19th time when the second team in the table Manchester City lost 2-1 to Chelsea. Liverpool had won 4-0 against Crystal Palace the day before.
