2010-2014: impressing with Borussia Monchengladbach

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen

made his professional debut for Monchengladbach senior side in the 2010-2011 season. He started the season as the B team's goalkeeper and made 18 appearances before being called up to the senior side midway into the season.

Gladbach was struggling for survival in Bundesliga at the time. After a series of blunders by the team's first-choice goalkeeper, Logan Bailly which costed Gladbach important points, the 19 years old Ter Stegen was called to the first team upon pressure from the fans.

Lucien Favre's decision to use Ter Stegen as the first choice goalkeeper in the final 5 matches of the campaign proved right as the youngster had an instant impact on the team's defensive performance. Ter Stegen kept four clean sheets as Gladbach avoided relegation via play-offs.

2014-2021: reaching the top of his game at Barcelona

Ter Stegen signed a 5 years contract with FC Barcelona at the beginning of 2014-15 season. In his first two seasons with the Catalans, he was the second-choice goalkeeper behind the Chilean, Claudio Bravo. Ter Stegen was made Barcelona's first-choice goalkeeper in the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League. He kept a clean sheet in his Champions League debut, a 1–0 home win for Barcelona against APOEL.

Claudio Bravo left Barcelona for Manchester City at the beginning of the 2016-17 season and Ter Stegen became the club's first choice goalkeeper in La Liga and the Champions League. Despite his brilliant performances, Barcelona failed to win any major trophies, which marked the end of Luis Enrique's reign as the manager.

Ter Stegen's two most memorable games of that season was in the famous 6-1 win over PSG in the

Champions League

Ter Stegen underwent a knee surgery at the beginning of the 2020-21 season which kept him out of the game for more than two months.
