Memphis Depay Early life

One the most uplifting though hackneyed part of Memphis Depay biography is that he was among millions of youth who has found solace in the golden tree of football away from the uncharted waters of his reality.

Memphis Depay childhood is particularly conspicuous because out of desperate condition he had gifted with extraordinary talent.

Whereas the relationship between his parents began to fall apart, Memphis and his mother had to survive on their own, having hardly any money. Happiness among themselves was the only beacon of hope for them to survive.

The trauma of Memphis Depay life story occurred when he was nine, after his mother moved them in with a neighbour she had fallen in love with.

Memphis was constantly beaten by the man's many children. He became a suspicious boy who rejected talking about his pain, and he quarrelled with teachers and football coaches.

He had a phase at school when he sat crying under his desk, terrified at the prospect of having to go home. By the time a friend of his mother's helped them leave the home, Memphis was a damaged child.

He began drinking at age 12, dealt in soft drugs, spent chunk of time with cocaine dealers and tried to make other people hurt like he did.

He had expelled from multiple schools and at the age of fifteen he was finally permitted to quit education and to bet his future on his football career.

Unable to express himself through words, at the times he rapped his feelings and sentiments to his mother.

Even today, Memphis seems more relaxed to draw comfort from communicating through rap (he writes his own lyrics in a Dutch-English mix), social media (he has about 10 million Instagram followers) and tattoos.

The lion's heart across his back, which gives the book its title, indicates his feeling that he spent his childhood in "a jungle" and finally triumphed.

Philanthrophy

Memphis Depay career statistics

If we take a closer look at Memphis Depay biogrophy, considering his career statistics whether in clubs or on international levels would be the matter of so much importance.

Clubs

Memphis journey through clubs had started when he was given a free role in PSV's first team while he was still a teenager.

Very soon, he became the best player in the Dutch league. Aged 20, he starred as a sub in Holland's run to third place at the 2014 World Cup.

After the World Cup, Spurs wanted him but Memphis believed they weren't "in the list of absolute top clubs."

After a year, he agreed to join Liverpool, but when Daniel Sturridge got injured, the club bought Christian Benteke instead.

When Manchester United rang in his age of 21, Memphis felt he was the man for the job: "I was convinced I could add something that wasn't there yet: creativity, boldness, moves.

Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. In name. But for years they played football that put you to sleep."

And there Memphis hit another low. He hoped for a free role, but United was likely never going to provide that to an inexperienced youngster.

He was stuck on the wing where he often chased defenders until he finally benched. His expensive clothes and Rolls-Royce was mocked by the British tabloids.

He was suffered similarly by Dutch pundits: When he attended to a match with Oranje wearing a large black hat, it was national news. The Dutch like their footballers to act normal.

After United, he selected his next destination with help from computer modelling. The data company SciSports recognized Olympique Lyon as a club probably to grant him a free role at outside-left, so he moved there in January 2017.

Sometimes specifically more recently he has been the most effective forward in the French league. But in the Dutch team, he is recognized as an unquestioned star.

Given a free role by coach Ronald Koeman, encouraged to dribble and shoot even if he loses the ball, Memphis is Oranje's main attacking threat

International

Depay’s international debut for the Dutch team started on 15 October 2013, when he came in as a replacement for his team-mate Jeremain Lens in the last minute of the 2-0 away win against Turkey in the World Cup qualifiers.

At the moment he is recuperating from a serious knee injury that threatened to rule him out of the Netherlands tilt for Euro 2020 honours.

Yet the unprecedented postponement of the competition because of the coronavirus pandemic means that he will be given more preparation time for the tournament.

Before suffering the physical setback, he had been benefiting a stellar season with OL, despite the team as a whole struggling.

He had scored nine goals in 13 Ligue 1 matches but had saved his best for the Champions League, scoring a single goal in all five fixtures in which he played as Lyon progressed through the group stages.
