Style of Play

Being 6’4” feet tall at the age of 19 Erling Haaland has an extraordinary style of play.

He is an aerial threat to his rivals, with long balls played towards him so that he can use his height and physical attributes to win headers and hold the ball up for his team.

However, Haaland actually prefers passes in behind the defensive line for him to chase as he is deceptively fast. While he is good in the air, his primary weapon is his pace and movement to get in behind defenders.

His heat map is more or less what one would expect from a striker – most of his work is done in the penalty area, but a significant amount of it is outside as well, with the map showing that he likes drifting out to the left flank.

This shows Haaland’s adaptability and intelligence, as the youngster moves out to the flank quite often in search of space before making a run into the box from out wide.

Moving to Borussia Dortmund a couple of days before the January 2020 winter transfer, the young star already is many big clubs' favorite, with many having an eye on him.

His former youth coach, Alf Ingve Berntsen has considere him a young talent as he mentioned in an inteview with Goal.com.

"I saw Erling for the first time when he was five when he joined indoor training with a group one year older. His first two touches led to goals. He was very, very good from the first moment, even though he hadn't played in the club before. He started playing in his own year group, but because he was so much better than the others, we immediately pulled him up to Under-6", said the coach who discovered Haaland.

Anyway, in the sights of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United, the 20-year-old center-forward could leave the German club during the next summer market.

It also has to be mentioned that according to the release clause in his contract, he will become available for €75 million in the summer of 2022. Interestingly the young star is so beloved that a €100 million price-tag would not be a surprise.

Goal celebration

Next item to talk about, is Haaland goal celebration. If you havent seen him celebrating a goal before you we'll get a bit surprise to know that to do so he sits on the pitch, crosses his legs, touches his thumbs to his fingers and closes his eyes, as if he is meditating or is in a yoga pose.

While he does not celebrate every goal in this fashion, the performative nature of this particular celebration has resulted in it becoming synonymous with the Norwegian. Indeed, Haaland has performed the celebration at both Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund, meaning it is something that is now very much a part of his image.

So, just as Cristiano Ronaldo has his iconic "Siii!" celebration, Haaland has already come up with a brand-boosting method of marking goals.
