One of the most important duties on the pitch is to score goals. Some footballers have done this duty very well and became the top scorers in a club or a competition. Here, we want to name the world cup top scorers of all time.

The FIFA World Cup or just the World cup is a professional football tournament that takes place every four years, in which national teams that are members of the International Football Association(FIFA) compete with each other.The first World cup took place on 13 July 1930 in Uruguay,  in which Uruguay itself became the winner. Since then, there have been 21 World cup tournaments hosted by 17 countries and, it's worth mentioning that five nations including, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, and Mexico, hosted the World cup twice. As we all know, the

2022 FIFA World Cup tournament

will take place in Qatar, beginning on Nov. 21.

Till now, eight national teams managed to achieve the World cup title: Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Spain, Argentina, France, and Uruguay. Among these nations, Brazil has won the most with five titles to its name. 

Obviously, the main factor that makes the World cup exciting is the players. Every four years, capable footballers of every nation step on the pitch to help their team crown as champions.Some individuals have done much more than others, and became the key factor in their nation's success. Some, by defending, some by creating chances, and some by making the chances into goals.

Thomas Müller

, and Germany player. Muller was named as one of the best footballers in the world by The Guardian in 2014.

He is a very versatile player and played in various attacking positions such as winger, attacking midfielder, second striker, and center-forward but he mainly plays as an attacking midfielder for Die Roten. However, in Germany's national team he usually is placed in the right-wing.He is regarded as one of the Best Germany Midfielders of all time for  His teamwork, positioning, work-rate, and stamina but what has made him so great is his ability to both score and create goals.

He has made 100 appearances for Germany, scoring 38 goals which as it was told earlier,10 of them were in the Worldcup. Muller has represented Germans in 3 different World cup one of which they won in 2014.

Grzegorz Lato

The Polish former footballer Grzegorz Lato is another player whose name is in seventh place on the

list. He played three world cups on Poland's side, scoring ten goals within them.

Born on 8 April 1950, Lato joined Poland when he was 21. His first appearance with Poland's shirt was in the qualifying game for the 1972 European Championships against West-Germany under former Poland coach Kazimierz Górski. Poland lost the game 3-1. Later on, he managed to improve his goal scoring abilities and became notable for his striking prowess, especially in big games.

Generally, Lato capped over 100 times within 13 years of playing for Poland. His achievements with Poland are included:

His retirement match came on 17 April 1984 in a friendly against Belgium and, he said goodbye to his national team.

Helmut Rahn

In the continuation of the list, we have the German forward Helmut Rahn known as the Boss( Der Boss.)He is widely known for his goal in the  1954 FIFA World Cup final against Hungary which, gave West Germany the lead and, they won the World cup.

After only eight minutes of the game, Germany was lagging two goals but, after Rahn provided an assist that lead to a goal and scored another himself, the match was equalized. With six minutes remaining, he managed to shoot the ball with the weaker foot before being tackled and, the ball was placed in Hungary's net, making the Germans champions. This match is known as The Miracle of Bern.

Rahn scored 9 more goals during his World cup appearances and became one of the fifa world cup all-time top scorers. In total, he played 40 international matches and scored a total of 21 goals. Unfortunately, he died on 14 August 2003 in his hometown Essen, Germany.

Gabriel Batistuta

Gabriel Omar Batistuta is the next player that is ranked seventh on the world cup top scorers of all time list. He is a former Argentine striker who is considered one of the greatest players of all time. He once became third for the FIFA World Player of the Year award and was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players in 2004.He played with  Serie A


, Roma, and Inter clubs but began his career with Argentine clubs including Newell's Old Boys, River Plate, and

Boca Juniors

. Before he retires, he played his last two seasons in Qatar with Al-Arab till 2005.

At the international level, he was  Argentina's top scorer till he was surpassed by Lionel Messi. Batistuta appeared in 77 official matches on Argentina's side and, within the appearances, he scored a total of  54 goals. Known as a powerful player whose specialty was strong strikes from volleys or from a distance while on the run, he is praised by many.

Jürgen Klinsmann

The German football manager Jürgen Klinsmann has managed teams like Germany, Bayern Munich, and the United States during his managerial career but, he was a footballer as well. He played as a Striker for several clubs in different leagues such as Inter, Monaco, Tottenham, Bayern, and so on.

Klinsmann played for his national team as well. He represented both West Germany and United Germany throughout his career, scoring 47 goals which 11 of them were in the World cups, making him the sixth among the

all-time world cup goal scorers

. It's worth mentioning that with 108 caps, he is the country's fourth-most capped player as well.

Born on 30 July 1964 in Göppingen, West Germany, he started football when he was eight with TB Ginge, an amateur soccer club in Gingen an der Fils. His highlight with TB Ginge came in a match where he scored 16 goals in a single match. Two years later, he moved to SC Geislingen stayed there four years then signed a contract with side Stuttgarter Kickers,  where he started his professional career. After making 61 appearances he changed his club and joined the first division club VfB Stuttgart.

Meanwhile, he joined Germany where he stayed for almost 11 years and helped his country win a FIFA World Cup title, a UEFA European Championship, Summer Olympic Games 1988 Bronze medal, and so on.

Sándor Kocsis

The  Hungarian footballer Sándor Kocsis also has 11 World Cup goals so he is tied with Jürgen Klinsmann in the sixth place of the

list.As a striker, Kocsis played for Ferencváros TC, Budapest Honvéd, Young Fellows Zürich, FC Barcelona, and Hungary.

He represented Hungary  68 times and scored 75 goals which is a somehow amazing goal/game average. He actually scored all of his WorldCup goals in one edition of Worldcup and there is one footballer that scored more goals than Kocsis in a single World Cup. Kocsis is also the first individual that scored two hat tricks in a World Cup. In total, Sándor Kocsis has scored seven hat tricks for Hungary.

Born on 21 September 1929 in Budapest, Hungary, he started his career with Köbanyai TC as a junior. Then he went to Ferencváros TC and after that, he joined Honvéd. \Meanwhile, he s made his debut for Hungary's first team in 1948.His first international hat trick came in a match against Sweden on 20 November 1949. In 1952, Hungary became Olympic Champions and Kocsis scored six goals in that tournament.Then came the 1954 World Cup, where he became the top goal scorer of the tournament.

Eventually, he ended his international career in 1956. Unfortunately on 22 July 1979, he fell to his death from the fourth floor of a hospital in


, which some believe was a suicide.


The legendary Brazillian forward Edson Arantes do Nascimento or widely known as Pele, is the next individual on the list.

He is considered as one of the greats in football, named as the  FIFA Player of the Century along with Maradona, named amongst the  100 most important people of the 20th century by Time, and also is one of the world cup top scorers of all time with 12 goals.

It's worth mentioning that Pele is the all-time goalscorer for Brazil and Santos's all-time top goalscorer too. He spent most of his club career with


making almost 500 appearances for them then, played only two years at New York Cosmos and retired.

In his international career, he played for Brazil for more than 14 years. He won three FIFA World Cup titles with them throughout his spell. In total, he represents Brazil in 92 games, scoring  77 goals.

Pelé has been praised as a complete forward and a prolific goalscorer. He is known for connecting the phrase "The Beautiful Game" with football. Despite being an amazing goalscorer, he was also a solid playmaker with vision and passing ability. So in general, we can state that he is one of the best and at some point, the best!

Just Fontaine

The French forward Just Louis Fontain is the only Frenchman in the list of world cup top scorers of all time. He is the fourth

with a total of 13 goals.

He was named the best French player of the last 50 years by the French Football Federation, chosen by Pelé as one of the 125 greatest living footballers, and is considered one of the bests in his generation. The fact that must be mentioned about this french footballer is that all of his WorldCup goals were scored in one edition of the competition. It is the highest number of goals ever scored by one player at a single World Cup edition.

Born in Marrakech, French Morocco he began his career in 1950 at USM Casablanca when he moved to Casablanca to attend the Lycée Lyautey. Soon after in 1953, he was transferred to Nice and also made his debut for France on 17 December 1953 against Luxembourg. Fontaine scored a hattrick that night!

In 1956, he left his club and joined Reims for six years. In his total club career, he appeared in 248 matches, and in his international career, he made 21 appearances. During those international appearances, he scored 30 goals.

Gerd Müller

The third most goals by a player in fifa world cup of all time is held by the former German footballer, Gerhard "Gerd" Müller with 14 goals. Known as "the nation's Bomber," he was a fast, agile and prolific striker who was named European Footballer of the Year in 1970, won a Golden Boot, and was voted 13th in the IFFHS' World Player of the Century election. Müller is the Bundesliga all-time top scorer which adds to his excellence.He spent most of his career in Bayern Munich, scoring 365 goals within 427 matches in his career.

Born in Nördlingen, Germany on 3 November 1945, he began playing football in 1861 Nördlingen as a youth, and then he joined the senior team in 1963. After a year, he got signed to Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, he got his way to Germany's team in 1966.

Since then Müller scored 68 goals in 62 matches, which as it told earlier,14 of them were in the Worldcups. He was the

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima possesses the title of second

with a total of 15 goals. He is a former Brazillian footballer who played as a striker. He had played for several big and famous clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and A.C. Milan. And of course, he played for Brazil as well.

Ronaldo has numerous individual honors which for example we can mention Ballon d'Or, the Golden Shoe, the Golden Ball, and the silver ball. As one of the greatest players of all time, he was inducted in several halls of fame and now continues his career as the president of La Liga club Real Valladolid.

Born on 18 September 1976  in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil he started his professional career at the age of 17 and made his debut for Brazil in a friendly match in Recife against Argentina on 23 March 1994. He was a part of the squad that won the 1994 FIFA World Cup but he did not play in that tournament. He went on to make  98 appearances for Brazil and score 62 goals, making him Brazil's third-highest goalscorer.

His vision, passing, crossing ability, techniques, or in total, greatness gave him so many achievements which one of them is being among the world cup top scorers of all time.

Miroslav Klose

is Bayern Munich's current assistant coach, Miroslav Klose. He was actually a pretty amazing striker when he was playing, he won the Golden Boot and other individual and team honors as well. Thanks to his strength, elevation, accuracy, timing, finishing ability, etc, he managed to score 16 goals and became the top scorer in world cup history.

Klose was born on 9 June 1978 in Opole, Poland but, he and his family moved to West Germany during world war 2.He began his professional career with a switch to the reserves at former Bundesliga outfit FC Homburg when he was 20. Later on, he moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern played for the second team and made his first appearance in the Bundesliga in April 2000. Werder Bremen was his next destination in 2004. Then, the last Bundesliga club that he joined before he went to Serie A and retired there, was Bayern Munich where he stayed four years.

As far as his international career goes, his journey began in 2001 when he was offered to play for Polan but he responded  "I have a German passport, and if things are still running this way, I have a chance to play for Rudi Völler(Germany's manager at that time)."

His wish was then fulfilled when he made his debut for Germany on  24 March 2001. Since then he scored 71 goals and capped 137. Within those years he won the World cup in 2014 as well.
