Rai's most contribution for PSG was in the 1996 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in which he scored twice in a 3–1 home win against Parma AC, after a 0–1 away loss. In 1997–98 Rai scored in both the Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France finals against Bordeaux and Lens respectively as PSG won both games.

He scored his first goal for PSG on his UEFA Champions League debut for the club, a 2–0 win over Malmo. In his first season, Di Maria set a new Ligue 1 record for assists in a season with 18.

He signed his first professional contract at age 19 with PSG. During his nine seasons with the club, Fernandez played over 220 games and scored 30 goals.
