Liverpool top goal scorers ever, who might they be? As you might have guessed the legendary Liverpool forward, Ian Rush, is among them and in fact tops the list. But there are still other all-time top goal scorers in Liverpool history, let’s get to know them!

As we already mentioned, Ian Rush is not only among the Liverpool highest goal scorers of all time but also tops their list.

He’s actually the

all-time top goal scorer in Liverpool history

with the biggest margin on the list: 61 goals from the second position occupied by Roger Hunt.

Top Scorers in Liverpool of All Time

In this post we are going to introduce 10 Liverpool highest goal scorers ever. The list is not surely limited to these top 10 footballers, but these are the best of the best! - in fact in terms of their goal scoring records in the history of Liverpool club.

Ian Rush (346 Goals)

Number one on the list of Liverpool top scorers of all time, Ian Rush has scored 346 goals in the 660 appearances he has made for

Liverpool

across all competitions which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.52 meaning that the 58-year-old retired footballer scored one goal in every two appearances he made for Liverpool.

As we already mentioned, these 346 goals were scored across all competitions, but if we divide them based on the competition they were scored in, here is the results: 229 at league level - Premier League in fact, 39 in

FA Cup

, 48 in League Cup, and 23 in other competitions.

As you see, the majority of the goals Rush has scored for Liverpool were at league level, in fact, 66% of all his goals for the Premier League club.

And the goals Rush has scored for Liverpool at league level (229) were actually scored in the 469 appearances he made for them, indeed, at league level. This actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.48 - this time at league level - which is very near to his overall goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.52 and means almost the same: He has scored almost one goal in every two appearances he has made for Liverpool at league level.

The only Welsh footballer on the list of

Liverpool top goal scorers ever

, Ian Rush has served Liverpool more than any other club during his career, in fact for 14 years and in 2 time periods, namely from 1980 to 1986, and from 1988 to 1996.

This  is actually more than half of his 20-year career and he scored more goals in less appearances in the former period - 109 goals in 182 appearances, while he only scored 90 goals in the 245 appearances he made for the Reds in the latter period.

Roger Hunt (285 Goals)

With a wide margin from the first position (61), Roger Hunt is actually the second footballer on the list of

Liverpool

top scorers of all time who has scored the most number of goals for the Premier League club.

The 82-year-old retired footballer has scored a total of 285 goals in the 492 appearances he has made for Liverpool from 1958 to 1969 which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.58 meaning that the retired footballer has scored almost 3 goals in every 5 appearances he has made for the Reds.

And from all the 285 goals Hunt scored for Liverpool 244 were scored at league level, 18 in FA Cup, 5 in League Cup, and 18 in other competitions. As you see, the majority of the goals Hunt scored for Liverpool were at league level, in fact, 85% of all his Liverpool goals.

And this number of goals (244) were scored in the 404 appearances Hunt made for the Reds which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.6 at league level which is, like Ian Rush’s ratio, very near to his overall ratio (0.58).

If it was not for the 3 years that Hunt served

Bolton Wanderers

from 1969 to 1972, we could say he had served Liverpool for all his career. The number of goals Hunt has scored for Liverpool only at league level (244) is more than ten times higher than the number of goals he has scored for the Wanderers (24).

Gordon Hodgson (241 Goals)

The first passed footballer on the list of

Liverpool top scorers of all time

who also died almost young - at the age of 47, Gordon Hodgson was an English footballer with South African origin who served Liverpool for 11 years between 1925 and 1936, and during this time he scored 233 goals in the 358 appearances that he made for the Reds at league level.

That actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.65 - in fact at league level - which means he scored almost 4 goals in every 6 appearances that he made for Liverpool.

The total number of goals Hodgson has scored for Liverpool, however, is 241. From all these goals 233 were scored at league level, as mentioned above, and 8 in FA Cup, but Hodgson scored no goals for Liverpool in League Cup or in other competitions. The number of goals he scored for Liverpool at league level (233) actually comprise 96% of all his Liverpool goals.

And Hodgson scored all his 241 goals for Liverpool in the 377 appearances that he made for the

Premier League

club. That actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.63 which is very near to his goal-to-appearance ratio at league level (0.65) and means the same: He scored almost 4 goals in every 6 appearances that he made for the Reds.

Billy Liddell (228 Goals)

And here is the second passed and first Scottish footballer on the list of Liverpool top scorers of all time: Billy Liddell; he’s also the first footballer on the list who served only Liverpool during his career lasting from 1938 to 1961.

As you see from the title, Billy Liddell scored 228 goals for Liverpool, and this number of goals were scored in the 534 appearances that the passed Scottish footballer made for the Reds. That actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.42 meaning that he scored two goals in every 5 appearances he made for Liverpool.

One of the

top scorers in Liverpool of all time

, Billy Liddell scored 215 goals for Liverpool at league level, and 13 goals in FA Cup, but he didn’t score any goals for the Premier League club in the League Cup or in other competitions, just like Gordon Hodgson. As you see, 215 goals of all Liddell’s 228 goals for Liverpool were scored at league level which actually comprise 94% of all his Liverpool goals.

And Liddell’s goal-to-appearance ratio at league level is 0.43 which is very near to his overall goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.42 - it is only higher by 0.01. It is noteworthy to mention here that Liddell never left Liverpool even when they were relegated to Second Division in 1953-54 season.

Steven Gerrard (186 Goals)

Liverpool legend who is also among the

best players ever in the history of Liverpool

, Steven Gerrard has scored a total of 186 goals in the 710 appearances he has made for Liverpool across all competitions which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.26 - lowest on the list of Liverpool top scorers of all time - meaning that the 40-year-old retired English footballer has scored one goal in every 4 appearances he has made for the Reds.

Gerrard is also the first footballer on the list of

highest goal scorers in Liverpool of all time

who is actually a full product of Liverpool - he played only for Liverpool youth team during his youth career. And if it was not for one season (2015-16) that he served the American club, LA Galaxy, we could say he had served Liverpool for all his senior career, too.

From among all the 186 goals Gerrard has scored for Liverpool 120 have been scored at league level, 15 in FA Cup, 9 in League Cup, and 42 in other competitions.

As you see, 120 goals of all the 186 goals Gerrard has scored for Liverpool have been scored at league level which comprise 64.5% of all the goals he has scored for the

Premier League

club. Gerrard has also played for the England national team from 2000 to 2014 making 114 appearances and scoring 22 goals for them in the process.

Robbie Fowler (183 Goals)

The second footballer after Ian Rush on the list of Liverpool top scorers of all time to have served Liverpool in two time Periods, namely from 1993 to 2001 and in 2006-07 season, Robbie Fowler has scored a total of 183 goals in the 369 appearances he has made for the Reds which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of almost 0.5 meaning that the retired 45-year-old English footballer has scored one goal in every two appearances he has made for Liverpool across all competitions.

Like Ian Rush, Fowler has also served 7 other clubs during his career with some of them being

Manchester City

, Leeds United - this one he shares with Ian Rush, and Blackburn Rovers, however, it was actually with Liverpool that he shined.

This is quite obvious from his goalscoring record at Liverpool compared to other clubs: He scored 128 goals for Liverpool only at league level which is more than 6 to 10 times higher than other clubs he served. The clubs he scored the most number of goals after Liverpool is Manchester City for whom he scored 21 goals.

As you see 128 goals of 183 goals Fowler scored for Liverpool were scored at league level which comprise almost 70% of all his Liverpool goals. The rest of his goals for Liverpool were scored in FA Cup (12), League Cup (29), and other competitions (14) which add up to a total of 45 goals.

Kenny Dalglish (172 Goals)

The second Scottish footballer on the list of

Liverpool top scorers of all time

, Kenny Dalglish scored 172 goals in the 515 appearances that he made for Liverpool during his career. That actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.33 which means he has scored almost two goals in every 6 appearances he has made for the Reds across all competitions.

The seventh highest goal scorers in Liverpool of all time, Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish has served Liverpool for more than half of his career; actually for 13 years between 1977 and 1990. The other club he served during his career was Celtic for whom he played for 8 years between 1969 and 1977.

And that’s all! The 69-year-old retired Scottish footballer served only two clubs during his career: Liverpool and

Celtic

, and the interesting thing about him is that he almost scored the same number of goals for both clubs at league level - for Liverpool 118 and for Celtic 112 goals - despite the fact that he served Liverpool 5 years longer.

From among the 172 goals Dalglish has scored for Liverpool 118 were scored at league level, as mentioned above, which comprise 68% of all his Liverpool goals. The rest of Dalglish’s Liverpool goals were scored in FA Cup (13), League Cup (27), and other competitions (12) which add up to 52 goals in total.

Michael Owen (158 Goals)

The eighth footballer on the list of

Liverpool top scorers of all time

who is also on our list of

best players ever in the history of Liverpool

, Michael Owen was the leading light of Liverpool at his own time, in fact between 1996 and 2004 that he served the Premier League club. Although Owen also served football giants like Real Madrid and Manchester United during his career, it was with Liverpool that he actually shined.

You may get surprised if you know that the number of goals Owen scored for Liverpool only at league level (118) are almost 10 times higher than the number of goals he scored for Real Madrid (13) and more than 20 times higher than the number of goals he scored for

Manchester United

(5).

However, that is quite justifiable if you consider that he served Real Madrid only for one year and Manchester United for three years, and he served Liverpool when his performance was at its peak.

From among all the 158 goals Owen scored for Liverpool 118 were scored at league level, as mentioned above, which actually comprise 74% of all his Liverpool goals. The rest of Owen’s goals for Liverpool were scored in FA Cup (8), League Cup (9), and other competitions (23) which add up to a total of 40 goals.

Owen also served the English national team for 10 years between 1998 and 2008 and during this time scored 40 goals in the 89 appearances that he made for them - almost one goal in every two appearances.

Harry Chambers (151 Goals)

The third passed footballer on the list of Liverpool top scorers of all time, Harry Chambers served Liverpool for 13 years which is a little bit more than two third of his footballing career. During this time which actually lasted from 1915 to 1928, Chambers scored 151 goals in the 339 appearances he made for Liverpool across all competitions.

That gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.44 which means he scored a little bit more than 2 goals (exactly 2.2) in every 5 appearances he made for the Reds.

From among all the 151 goals Chambers scored for Liverpool 135 were scored at league level which actually comprise 89% of all his

Liverpool

goals. The rest of Chambers’ Liverpool goals (16) were scored in FA Cup, and that means he scored no goals for the Reds in the League Cup, or other competitions.

And Chambers scored his 135 league goals for Liverpool in 310 appearances which actually gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.43 indeed at league level which is very near to his overall goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.44. The passed English footballer also played for the England national team between 1921 and 1923 and scored 5 goals in the 8 appearances he made for them.

Sam Raybould (130 Goals)

The fourth passed and the last footballer on the list of

Liverpool top scorers of all time

, Sam Raybould is the only footballer on the list who served 14 clubs during his career - even more than Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler - with some of these clubs like Poolsbrook United being no more today.

Among all the clubs Raybould served during his career, Liverpool gets the highest share of goals and appearances made by the passed English footballer at league level.

Raybould actually scored 120 goals in his 211 appearances for Liverpool at league level which both are between 9 to 10 times higher than the number of appearances he made and goals he scored for other clubs.

That wide gap is indeed justifiable, if you consider that the passed English footballer served Liverpool for seven years - from 1900 to 1907 - while he played for other clubs he served during his career for one year or so.
