Łukasz Piotr Piszczek was born on 3 June 1985 in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland. He began his football career in 2001 as a striker in Gwarek Zabrze. Christian Wörns was born on 10 May 1972 in Mannheim, West Germany. At the young age of 17 , he made his professional Bundesliga debut with Waldhof Mannheim and at the time, was the fourth-youngest debutant ever.

Later on, in 1991 he had been transferred to Bayer Leverkusen and soon proved himself as a devoted defensive and secured the strong Leverkusen defense for nearly a decade. He played in Leverkusen for almost ten years and in 1998 he joined Paris Saint-Germain in France but it wasn't a successful decision. He couldn't settle in and after one season transferred to Borussia Dortmund. He continued to play at Borussia Dortmund until his retirement in 2008. Neven Subotić was born on 10 December 1988 in Banja Luka, SFR Yugoslavia. At the time of the Bosnian War, his family had to immigrate a lot. First, they went to Germany but in the late 1990s, the Subotić family's residence authorization in Germany expired, and in order to avoid being deported back to Bosnia, they decided to immigrate to the United States of America, where Subotić's father had a cousin.

They finally settled in Florida and while he was training on his own, he got spotted by Keith Fulk, one of the American team's assistant coaches who then informed the team's head coach, John Ellinger, about Subotić and so on he eventually started playing with the University of South Florida team. Subotic started his club career with 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the last match of the 2006–07 season against Bayern Munich and just after a year, on 4 June 2008 it was officiated that Subotic had joined BVB by a five-year contract.

Subotić's defensive performances immediately turned a lot of heads. In December 2008, he was listed in the ideal XI team of the first part of the 2008–09 Bundesliga season, alongside such defensive stars as Lúcio and Philipp Lahm. Besides his confident and powerful defensive displays far beyond his years, Subotić was also a factor on the offensive end, scoring six league goals throughout the season.

The current manager of the youth team of Viktoria Köln is the next one on the list of best defenders in Dortmund history. Jürgen Kohler was born on 6 October 1965 in Lambsheim, West Germany. Kohler's professional career started with Waldhof Mannheim. He made his Bundesliga debut as a substitute in a match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in April 1984.

He played for two years in Mannheim then in 1987 he had been transferred to 1. FC Köln. Till 1989 he stayed there and then decided to continue his career in Bayern Munich and in his first season at the club he won the Bundesliga championship. After a while, in 1991 he had been transferred to Juventus and soon named Serie A's best foreign player for 1992. He stayed there till 1995.

He left Italy and came back to his country and continue his football in Borussia Dortmund and due to his brilliant performances he soon named Footballer of the Year (Germany) in 1997. At his time, Kohler was acknowledged as one of the best defenders of his generation. He was a physically strong center-back and known for his defensive perception, anticipation, quick reactions, marking, prowess in the air, composure when in possession, and his ability to play the ball out of defense.
