Everton Football Club was founded in 1878. The club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888, and two seasons later, in 1890, won its first English league title.

Everton is structurally a limited company with a board of directors holding a majority stake. On February 27, 2016, Ardavan Farhad Moshiri, an Iranian-British businessman and investor, bought a 49.9% stake in the club and became the club's main shareholder.
