MLS awarded a team to Toronto in 2005. An online poll was conducted to determine the name of the club, in which the public could cast their ballots within the allotted time. The possible names present in this poll were "Toronto Northmen", "Inter Toronto FC", "Toronto Reds", and in the end, the name "Toronto FC" was chosen with more than 40% of the popular vote.

In the design of the Toronto FC team uniform, the main color is red and black, gray, dark gray and white are used as secondary colors. Original uniform (Shirts, shorts and socks) is red with horizontal stripes lighter and darker, and black sleeves with red embellishments.

The Toronto FC uniforms, like all other MLS teams, are made by Adidas. In 2013 and 2014, a maple leaf with a shadow was featured on Toronto FC's original jerseys.

Since its official formation in 2007, the Montreal Financial Team (BMO) has provided financial support to the club. Initially, the value of the sponsorship was between $ 1 million and $ 1.5 million per season, but in 2010, a new sponsorship deal worth $ 4 million per season was signed for 5 years. In February 2016, BMO extended its sponsorship contract for another ten years.
