The history of Italian Serie A

Serie A began in 1898, but it wasn't as it structured today. From 1898 to 1922, the competition was among just regional groups. Ever-growing teams attending regional championships made the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) split the CCI (Italian Football Confederation) in 1921. In 1926, due to internal crises and fascist pressures, the FIGC changed internal settings, adding southern teams to the national division. Torino was the champion in the 1948–49 season following a plane crash near the end of the season in which the entire team was killed.

, it's worth mentioning that since the 1923–24 season, Serie A championship title is often referred to as the scudetto which is the Italian word for small shield and it'll be awarded to the winner to wear on the shirt. 

Through the years, Serie A logo has changed a lot. First, in 1996 it was a simple ball and some colors of the Italian flag. Then, its shape changed and the league's name was added to it and the word "TIM" which was referred to Telecom Italia, the league's major sponsor, was written below it.

Scandals in Italian Serie A

Serie A was the best league in the world but in the '00s things started to change. It was in 2006 that for the first time some news about scandal in Serie A was published and it pushed Italian football into darkness. The Calciopoli match-fixing scandal.

The investigation into the scandal showed that some Italian clubs, including major ones, had been found in relationships with various refereeing organizations. Juventus, Fiorentina, Milan, Lazio, and Reggina were all accused and found guilty. The punishments were different and depended on the level of participation but the most severe punishment was handed out to Juventus.

Juventus were relegated to stripped of the 2004-2005 league title, relegated to Serie B and deducted 9 points at the start of the season. Their Champions League qualification was also taken from them.

That crisis resulted in some punishments for other teams as well as initial verdicts which handed out to some individuals such as:

• Luciano Moggi:

   five-year ban from football and five years and four months imprisonment; acquitted in 2015

• Antonio Giraudo:

  five-year ban from football and three years imprisonment; acquitted in 2015

• Tullio Lanese:

  two years and six-month ban from football

About 20 more players were also faced with severe punishments.

It was Inter Milan and AC Milan that benefited from Juventus's absence. Inter Milan won four league titles in a row before AC Milan claimed it from them in 2010-2011. Of coarse, as Juventus saved its core it succeded to return to Serie A again.

In the last five seasons, there have been serious questions over the quality of Serie A, Juventus has monopolized the league each season winning it at a canter and some of the giants of the game are competing such as Inter and AC Milan. Wealthy owners saved these clubs for many years now, but they just can't compete.

Football once again has evolved and Inter and AC Milan are unable to compete in the marketplace. 

Failure to qualify for the Champions League has also seen income to these two greats fall. AC Milan has not been featured in the Champions League since 2013-2014 and Inter Milan has not been featured since 2011-2012. This season is the third successive season that neither Milan club has qualified for the competition and with the way the league is shaping up this season it will be four in a row come May.

Since 2010, no Italian team has won the Champions League. Juventus came runners up in 2015. Except for that Italy has only gone as far as the quarter-finals on three separate occasions. Inter 2010, Milan 2011, and Juventus 2012.

In their places in Serie A, Roma and Napoli have appeared again. They have pushed Juventus all the way in the last few seasons. Actually It hurts to see clubs like Inter and AC not playing in the top competition in Europe.
