Inzaghi on Inter’s January plans and Lukaku’s exit shock

The Inter coach persuaded his side to convince Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic to pen new contracts, and they also eye Nahitan Nandez for recruitment. However, he revealed that Romelu Lukaku’s move to Chelsea came as a shock.

Simone Inzaghi

had a long interview with

La Gazzetta dello Sport

and he talked about replacing

Antonio Conte

and bringing the winter

Serie A

title to

When he was appointed in the summer, the plan was to only cash in on

Achraf Hakimi

but the condition changed rapidly.

“I trained Lukaku for a week, he is a great player,”

said Inzaghi.

“His exit really wasn’t in the air, we had only planned to sell Hakimi.

“When we did realise Lukaku would leave, that night I spoke to (directors Beppe) Marotta and (Piero) Ausilio and mentioned Edin Dzeko. They replied it was honestly an open goal with them, because they’d been trying to get him for years.

“Dzeko is the kind of striker that helps the team to play well.”

Now that the Nerazzurri are sitting top of the table with four points clear and have gotten

Champions League

Round of 16 qualification, they are now concentrating on the January transfer window.

Alexis Sanchez

is linked with an exit but it appears as if Stefano Sensi and Matias Vecino are the more likely to leave.

“My priority would be to keep everyone, but we’ll see about improving in the middle and on the wings. It has been a pleasure to work with Alexis Sanchez and watch him play over the last month, he just needed luck and health to be on his side. I am fortunate to have these four strikers and want to keep them all.”

The Uruguay international was Inter’s target for the summer window and they may still go for him in January, with Inzaghi not disguising.

“Nandez is an interesting player, a versatile profile, he could suit our needs. I don’t want to discuss specific names, but the club is vigilant on the market. If there is a good opportunity, then we’ll try to take it.”

Inter’s midfield is strange, with both Brozovic and Perisic reaching the end of their contracts.

“Brozo has to hurry up and sign his renewal! He loves Inter and everything around this club, he’s an extraordinary player and for years Inter have been reliant on him.

“I hope that Perisic signs soon as well. I knew that he was a champion, but what I discovered was he’s really eager to help out and do anything required, playing as a support striker or wide right, any time he is asked.”
