France Football editor reveals Ronaldo's last ambition before retiring

The French magazine is in charge of handing out football's most prestigious individual award.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's rivalry has extended into almost all levels of club, international and individual trophies. Together the pair have won 11 of the Ballon d'Or awards handed in the past 13 years. 

Messi holds the record for most Ballon d'Or awards with six wins, while Ronaldo has won the prize five times. The Argentine icon has the chance to extend his lead furthermore this year as he is among the bookmakers' favourites to win this year's award, 

France Football editor Pascal Ferre, who is charged with handing out the award, has spoken about Ronaldo's ambition to win the Ballon d'Or again.

"Ronaldo has only one ambition and that is to retire with more Ballon d'Or [awards] than Messi,"

Ferre told the 

New York Times

.

"I know because he has told me."

Ronaldo scored 36 goals last season and won the Coppa Italia in his final campaign at

Juventus

. However, he is not considered among the top favourites to win the Ballon d'Or, with Messi,

Robert Lewandowski

and Jorginho being the frontrunners to claim the prize.

The winner of the Ballon d'Or 2021 will be announced during an official presentation, which will take place on Monday.
