“We don’t play well” Xavi criticizes Barca despite Villarreal win
Barcelona secured their first away win of the La Liga season against the Yellow Submarines.
with a 3-1 result on Saturday. Frenkie de Jong scored the opener for Barca in the 48th minute, before Samuel Chukwueze equalized the game thirty minutes later. The Catalans clinched the victory with two late goals fromMemphis Depay
and Philippe Coutinho.
This was Barcelona's first away win in their current La Liga campaign and the first time they managed to win back-to-back games this season.
In a post-match interview after his third game in charge of the Catalans, Xavi Hernandez admitted the final result did not represent Barca's form.
"It was very even, Villarreal is a great team,"
he told a media conference. "
Of the three games that I have played, it is the one that we have dominated the least and the one that we least deserved to win.
"Today could have ended up as a draw and instead we are leaving with a victory. That is tremendous and gives us a lot of morale.
"It is a spectacular victory that gives us a lot of morale to continue growing. This victory gives us life.
"That game was the minimum required. Belief, attitude, respect for the badge, and hard work; they are the foundations of a team. Today was a victory of team spirit. When we do not play well, we also have to win. We are Barca."
The first ten minutes of the game was quite chaotic as both teams tried to get a quick opener. Villarreal's Dani Parejo was lucky to escape a red card after a reckless challenge on Sergio Busquets, while the referee missed a blatant handball from Gerrard Pique inside Barca's box.
Asked about the referee's performance, Xavi responded:
"In the end, I will not talk about the referees. It is a very difficult job and I will not put myself into it.
"In the end, it is the referee who decides. One day he can help you and another day harm you. It is difficult to be a referee."
Barcelona moved up to seventh place on the La Liga table after their win over Villarreal. The Catalans will now prepare for a home game againstReal Sociedad
on December 4.
