Koulibaly: It's a shame Mendy is not nominated for Ballon d'Or

The Chelsea goalkeeper was a key part of the Blues’ successful campaign last season.

Since his transfer from Rennes last September, Edouard Mendy has established himself as the Blues’ number one goalkeeper. The Senegalese’s impressive performances quickly oust Kepa Arrizabalaga from the Blues’ lineup, providing Thomas Tuchel’s side with crucial saves in their quest to win the Champions League trophy.

Mendy registered nine clean sheets in the Champions League last season, which is more than any other goalkeeper in his debut campaign. However, the 29-year-old is not included in Ballon d’Or’s 30-man shortlist for this year’s awards, which has surprised Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Napoli center-back believes his countryman deserved to have a place on the shortlist.

"It's a real shame that Edou isn't included. He is the first African goalkeeper to win the Champions League,"

Koulibaly said.

"We must continue to work and move forward. We have to do the double [the work] of some people to be well judged.

"Edou is a very positive person. We talked about it together. He will continue to fight to be part of it. For me, he has a place among these 30 players."

Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez are the African players included on the 30-man list, while Gianluigi Donnarumma is the only goalkeeper nominated for the prize.
