The Bavarian star surpassed Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Bayern’s all-time goalscoring chart.
Bayern Munich defeated the newly promotedGreuther Furth
with a 3-1 result on Friday, securing their fifth victory of the campaign. In a match that saw Robert Lewandowski’s 15-match goalscoring streak come to an end, Thomas Muller broke a club record by scoring the opener for the Bavarians.
Thomas Muller scored his 218th goal for Bayern, which puts him above the club legendKarl-Heinz Rummenigge
on Bayern’s all-time goalscoring chart. In a post-match interview, Bayern’s captain
spoke about Muller’s achievement.
"He doesn't get tired and has been around for a long time,"
"I've accompanied him for long stretches of this time, and I'm always happy about every one of Thomas' goals and celebrations, which sometimes look a bit weird with him.
"I'm especially happy for him personally, because we've been playing together for a long time, but I think he'll have to report to Kalle [Rummenigge] today."
Following their draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in the opening game of the season, Bayern have won all of their last five league matches. A victory against Greuther Furth puts the German champions three points ahead of Wolfsburg, who are yet to play their sixth game of the campaign.
"It looks quite good. We scored three goals and showed a good attitude. In the first half, we didn't make enough of it when we had space. We wasted a lot of chances. That's annoying.”
Bayern were down to ten men for most of the game after a careless tackle by Benjamin Pavard persuaded the referee to send him off in the 48th minute.
"Despite being a man down, we made it 3-0, which gives you a good feeling. Then we got in between the lines better, but sometimes we were too sloppy.
"It's nitpicking really, but we can still play more flowing football. We're happy with how it's going, but we always have to take the next step and improve."
Bayern will face Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League on Wednesday, before meeting Eintracht Frankfurt in Bundesliga three days later.
