Muller jokes about Lewandowski letting him score

Sun 29 August 2021 | 9:05

After the Bundesliga winners thrashed Hertha Berlin 5-0, the Germany international expressed his astonishment to see his team-mate pass him an early chance in the game.

After witnessing Bayern Munich star

Robert Lewandowski

hit his first hat-trick of the season,

Thomas Muller

teased Lewandowski about putting him up with a goal.

The Bavarians climbed to second place in the

Bundesliga

on Saturday after beating Hertha Berlin 5-0 at Allianz Arena. Lewandowski scored three goals, while Muller and Jamal Musiala also found the net.

Muller scored after collecting a ball from Alphonso Davies in the box with just six minutes on the clock, but he was shocked to see Lewandowski make a brilliant deception instead of seizing the opportunity himself.

"I asked if he was not fit or if he had reached the next level because he suddenly lets balls through in the penalty area for someone better placed," Muller told

Sky Germany

 after the game.

"He notices that when he plays more selflessly, that we still serve him and that he scores his goals. That's the crazy thing, then he'll do a hat trick in passing. He has a nose, then he has skills - left, right, head, body, he knows where a ball is going, where it can be dangerous."

After setting up Muller's opening goal, Lewandowski grabbed center stage, knocking home a ricochet from short range in the 35th minute to extend his streak of scoring in successive Bundesliga matches to 13.

Just after half-time, Musiala netted a superb goal to put the champions 3-0 up, before Lewandowski grabbed his 300th goal for the club, and the Polish striker capped off a wonderful afternoon by scoring his hat-trick six minutes from time.

Bayern will now have a two-week vacation for the international break before returning to domestic action on September 11 against RB Leipzig.

They play their first

Champions League

group stage match three days later, a heavyweight fight versus

Barcelona

at Camp Nou.
