Rummenigge thinks Sane’s Bayern situation is similar to Robben’s

The Germany international was sent off at half-time in Bayern Munich’s victory over Cologne with the crowd's taunts.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

sees similarities between

Leroy Sane

's situation at

Bayern Munich

and that of

Arjen Robben

’s during his early years with the German champions.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Bundesliga side in 2020 from

Manchester City

, has had a hard time playing consistently with Bayern.

The German winger established himself as one of the Premier League’s most outstanding attackers when he was playing for City; however, he became a rather peripheral figure under the reign of Hansi Flick last season.

During Nagelsmann’s first home game at the helm on Sunday, Sane was taken off the pitch at half-time.

He failed to be on target during the first half against Cologne, his replacement Jamal Musiala, however, managed to tee up Robert Lewandowski’s opener in their 3-2 victory.

Rummenigge, who departed his position at the club’s board when last season ended, thinks the German’s predicament and how he is being treated by some fans is similar to what Robben experienced.

Robben made a move to Bayern in 2009 and became a Bayern legend, but Rummenigge revealed that the Netherlands attacker wanted to depart at some point.

"

At first, I didn't like it, I feel sorry for him [Sane],"

Rummenigge said on Bild's Reif ist live podcast about what happened on Sunday.

"He tries but has no confidence. He didn't play a good game. With his transfer fee and salary, the criticism of the fans is slowly coming up.

"I remembered 2012 in the stadium. There was the famous home final [in the Champions League]. It reminded me of the sad Arjen Robben. He missed a penalty in the final.

"Arjen was almost ready to ask for his release. But we said: 'No, we won't do that.' He was an important player for Bayern Munich. We supported him.

"Jupp Heynckes built him up as a coach. He was extremely ambitious. The result: a year later he was the match-winner in the Champions League final against Dortmund."

Sane has played in 46 matches for Bayern but just 28 of them were starts. He has met the back of the net nine times and contributed eight assists.
