Breaking: an ankle injury leaves Bayern's Neuer sidelined for weeks

Thu 19 August 2021 | 11:04

According to the club’s announcement, during Tuesday’s DFL Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund, Bayern’s captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has suffered a capsular ligament injury in his right ankle.

The Germany international captain picked up the injury during

Die Rotten’s 3-1 victory over Dortmund

as he immediately called the physios over to take a look at his foot in the middle of the second half, ostensibly due to some discomfort.

Although the 35-year-old managed to finish the game, it seems that the club’s captain is set for a spell on the sidelines.

There is no formal information about the severity of the injury and it’s unsure how much Manuel Neuer will be sidelined, but he risks missing Bayern’s game against RB Leipzig in the league and the Champions League group stage opener.

In Neuer’s absence,

Sven Ulreich

will likely have to don the keeper’s gloves, while Thomas Muller will pick up the armband.

Ulreich rejoined Bayern this summer

 after

Alexander Nubel

was loaned to Monaco. The 32-year-old spent last season with Bundesliga 2 side Hamburg, but Bayern moved to re-sign the experienced stopper on a free transfer.

Meanwhile,

Nubel

, who had only made 4 appearances across all competitions last season, was eagerly loaned out to Monaco in order not to slow down his progress.
