With the transfer of Granit Xhaka to Roma ruled out,Arsenal
will soon announce the extension of their captain's contract.
While Xhaka had been negotiating with Roma for several months, his transfer to the Italian capital appeared to be final. He was one of Jose Mourinho's transfer priorities for the midfield, but Roma did not finally agree a transfer fee with Arsenal. Xhaka, meanwhile, had reached an agreement with Roma on personal terms.
Mikel Arteta announced on Sunday that the Swiss star will not leave the Emirates Stadium, and the players will soon announce the extension of his contract. Fabrizio Romano reports that the new contract will be extended until 2025 and that Xhaka's salary will increase.
The issue is expected to be officially announced by the Arsebak authorities soon, and Roma will have to think of another option to strengthen the midfield.
Thomas Delaney and Teun Koopmeiners are close to joining the club, and Mourinho intends to sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window.
