Gignac insists France are still alive at the Olympics

The Bleus bounced back from their 4-1 defeat against Mexico by beating South Africa in a hard-fought match.

France

defeated South Africa with a 4-3 result in the second round of the men’s football competition at the Tokyo Olympics.

Andre-Pierre Gignac

scored a hat-trick as France bounced back from their unexpected defeat against Mexico. Despite his side’s struggles in their first two games, Gignac believes France’s chances of winning Olympic gold must not be overlooked.

"There is a burst of pride, a little ego too and we win. It's a victory that feels good and brings us together."

Gignac said after the game.

The

Tigres UANL

striker added:

"It won't be easy because there has been an incredible burst of energy, but with such a young and talented group, we can do something.

"We paid the price against Mexico, against a ready team that has been preparing for three months, always coming to the Games to do something big. We are here for the first time since 1996 but we are there, still in the battle."

France will face

Japan

in their next match on Wednesday. The Bleus must beat the hosts to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
