Barcelona found the solution to renew Ilaix Moriba’s contract

Sun 25 July 2021 | 12:15

With 14 La Liga and 18 total appearances for Ronald Koeman's team in 2020/21, the 18-year-old midfielder had a strong debut season. However, despite establishing himself as a first-team player, his contract issue has fueled transfer speculation in the last week.

It’s been reported earlier

that since the 18-year-old might sign a pre-contract with a non-Spanish team as early as January 2022, Koeman and the board may have difficulty persuading him to remain at the club.

However, according to

Mundo Deportivo

, as the negotiations seemed to be locked in a situation that neither of the parties could find the middle ground, it seems a possible solution lies in the manner they renewed fellow La Masia products Alejandro Balde’s deal.

Offering

Moriba

a 3-year deal, the teenager will be able to establish himself in

Ronald Koeman’s

first team and renegotiate for higher terms when he’s 21, at which point Barcelona’s financial situation will also be better.

Being relegated to

Barcelona

B as punishment for his contract stance, sources close to the negotiation claim it’s 50/50 whether he’ll stay or leave as the Premier League appears as the most likely destination for the promising young midfielder.

Ilaix Moriba was part of a generation of talented Barcelona stars

at Lamasia, including Konrad de la Fuente, Nico Gonzalez, Jaume Jardi, Arnau Tenas, Alvaro Sanz, Alejandro Balde, among several others.

He was promoted to Barcelona B due to his excellent results for the Barcelona U19s and made his professional debut in the Segunda Division B game against SD Ejea on 7 September 2019.
