Inter may terminate contract with Benfica-linked Mario

Sun 11 July 2021 | 20:50

Reports claim that the Nerazzurri and Joao Mario will end their contract by mutual consent, losing €7.5m for Benfica to sign him and Sporting CP to not take legal action.

Inter

’s signing of

Joao Mario

in 2016 on a €40m transfer fee has turned out to be a flop. He was sent on a loan spell at West Ham and Lokomotiv Moscow last season and then to

Sporting

, who planned to make his move permanent, but only offered €3.5m.

According to the reports,

Benfica

made a €7.5m offer; however, Inter were reluctant to accept it as they were concerned Sporting would take legal action, which is because of the clause included in his deal back in 2016. The clause forces Inter to pay about €30m to Sporting if they sold the Portugal international to any Portuguese club other than Sporting.

The Serie A side’s lawyers were looking into the situation and as per reports from Sportitalia it may get increasingly tense.

Inter are considering terminating his deal by mutual consent, letting Mario join Benfica on free agency.
