‘It was a clear penalty’ – Raheem Sterling after 2-1 win over Denmark

England striker Raheem Sterling maintains he was awarded a clear penalty as England booked their spot in the Euro 2020 final with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Denmark.

But the referee whistled for a penalty and although

's penalty, the England captain scored from the rebound to send the Three Lions to the final with a 2-1 win.

The penalty was controversial and there was a lengthy VAR check, but


insisted after the match that the spot-kick was correct.

“I went into the box and he stuck his leg out. He touched my leg and it was a clear penalty.”

Said Sterling


“As long as the penalty goes in the back of the net that is all that matters. The keeper saved it but then Harry Kane put it in on the rebound.”

This is England’s first major final since winning the 1966 World Cup and they are aiming for Euro 2020 glory at Wembley.

He added:

“It is another step in the right direction. We have to focus on the weekend now. It is always step by step.

“Football means so much to this country and the fans came out in their numbers tonight. You could feel the energy and atmosphere.

“Now for Italy. We will celebrate a little bit but from tomorrow onwards it is all about Italy.

“We knew it was going to be difficult tonight. We had to stay patient and we knew it would only be a matter of time before we broke them down.”
