Spanish Champions Atletico Madrid are set to announce the signing of Portugal Under-19 striker Marcos Paulo on a five-year deal from Fluminense.

He is Los RojiBlancos’ first signing of the summer transfer window and has joined the club as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at the Brazilian club.

The 20-year-old, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, arrived in Spain’s capital where he will link up with his compatriot

Joao Felix

at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Marcos Paulo

’s Portuguese citizenship was gained through his grandfather, who lived in a small village in Portugal and then emigrated to Brazil, where he remains to this day.

So he already has a European passport and would not take up a non-EU spot in Atleti’s squad.

Atletico Madrid

set to get their pre-season preparation underway on July 7,

Marcos Paulo

will be aiming to make an impression on

Diego Simeone

to gain a starting role. However, he will face difficult competition from

Luis Suarez

Joao Felix

Thomas Lemar

, and

Angel Correa

Paulo scored 14 goals for the Brazilian side considering that he is not an all-out striker and is primarily a player who likes to drop deep, show for the ball, and cover lots of ground from a position predominantly on the left.

Switching permanently to Europe could also facilitate Portugal’s ability to confirm the player as a potential senior international, now that his long-term club future has been secured.
