Euro 2020: Who Has Qualified For the Knockout Stages

Everyone is talking about Euro 2020, a competition that happens once after every four years. This year’s competition was to be held in 2020 but was pushed to 2021 due to the pandemic.

Here are the teams that have made it to the Euro 2020 knockout stages. 

Italy 

Following their 3-0 win against Switzerland, Italy became the first team to qualify for the round of 16 knockout stages. The team took the first position in their group A matches with nine points.  

Italy faced Austria in the knockout stages and won 2-1, securing a slot to the next stage.  

Wales 

Wales took the second position in Group A matches which saw them qualify for the round of 16 despite losing their last match against Italy. The team only won a single match in the group stages against Turkey, drew with Switzerland, and lost to Italy. Wales finished the group stages with only 4 points, enough to send them to the knockout stages. 

However, the team didn’t last long in the knockout stages as it was thrashed four goals to nil by Denmark. 

Switzerland  

Switzerland moved to the knockout stages after finishing third in the group stages with four points. The team was among the best four-third teams chosen to qualify for the round of 16. Switzerland faced France in their round of 16, where the match ended in a 3-3 draw. They proceeded to penalties and defeated France 4-3.  

Belgium  

Belgium emerged winners in Group B with nine points qualifying for the 

Euro 2020 knockout stage

. The team won all their group stage matches and was sure for a slot in the round of 16.  

Belgium played Portugal in the knockout stages and secured a slot to the next stage after a one-nil win. 

Denmark 

Denmark came out second in the group stages with three points, qualifying for the knockout stages. The team downed Russia 4-1 in their final group matches. 

Denmark faced Wales and won the match four goals to nil, securing a slot in the quarter-finals. They’ll now face the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals on the second of July. 

Austria 

Following their win against Ukraine, Austria qualified for the round of 16. Austria took the runners-up badge in group C with six points. 

They faced Italy in the knockout stages and were sent home with a one-nil defeat. 

Netherlands 

Netherlands took the first position in group C, securing a chance to play in the knockout stages. The team won all three matches in the group stages taking all nine points. 

They faced the Czech Republic in the round of 16 and were thrashed two goals to nil, knocking them out of the competition. 

Ukraine 

Ukraine entered the knockout stages as best losers after finishing third in Group C with only three points. The team lost two games and won one in the group stages. 

The team hopes to qualify for the quarter-finals when they face Sweden in their knockout match on 29th June. 

England 

England came top in Group D with seven points and qualified for the round of 16. Their final match in the group stages was against the Czech Republic, where they downed it 1-0.  

England will now face Germany in the knockout stages. The match will be played on 29th June. 

Croatia 

After finishing second in group stages, Croatia secured a slot to participate in the 2020 Euro knockout stage.  

The team completed their group stages with only four points. However, Spain knocked them out of round 16 following a 3-5 loss. 

Czech Republic 

Captained Georgino Wijnaldam led his team to secure a slot in the round of 16 after finishing third in Group D. 

Following their 2-0 win against Netherlands, Czech Republic has now qualified for the 2020 Euros quarters final. They’ll host Denmark on third July. 

Spain 

Spain beat Slovakia in their final group stage match, pushing them to the Euros 2020 round of 16. They finished second in their group behind Sweden. 

As we speak, Spain has already secured a slot in the quarter-finals after beating Croatia 5-3. They’ll now lock horns with Switzerland. 

Sweden 

Sweden went to the round of 16 as group winners after emerging victorious against Poland in a 3-2 win.  

The team will now host Ukraine in the knockout stage on 29th June, hoping to secure a slot in the Euro 2020 quarterfinals. 

France 

Group F of the Euros 2020 was one of the toughest, yet France managed to come out of it as winners with five points. The team qualified for the knockout stages after drawing with Portugal. 

However, they were knocked out of the competition by Swirzeland after Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty kick. 

Germany 

 

Germany came second in Group F with four points securing a chance to play in the knockout stage. The group will now face England in the round of 16, hoping to qualify for the Euro 2020 quarterfinals. 

Portugal

 

A draw against France in their last match was enough to send Portugal to the round of 16 competition. Despite qualifying for the knockout stages, Portugal was sent home by Belgium following a 1-0 defeat.
