Switzerland eliminate France at Euro 2020 in penalty shootout

Mon 28 June 2021 | 22:30

Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved Kylian Mbappe’s penalty in a penalty shootout to knock France out of the European Championship.

The world champions came into the tournament as favorites but failed to hit the heights of their game in Russia and suffered an early shock exit at the hands of Switzerland.

Haris Seferovic

's strong header gave

Switzerland

the first-half lead in a game that

France

did not have anything to say.

Steven Zuber

sent out a beautiful ball, Seferovic rose in the center of the box and sent the ball into the back of the net with a header into the bottom left where

Hugo Lloris

had no chance of saving it.

France boss

Didier Deschamps

made a much-needed change to France at half-time, sending

Kingsley Coman

in instead of

Clement Lenglet

.

Things could have gotten worse for the World Cup champions when the referee awarded a penalty to Switzerland after

Zuber

faced a sliding challenge from

Pavard

in the box which caught him instead of the ball.

However,

Rodriguez

failed to convert his penalty and the result remained the same until

Real Madrid

’s striker

Karim Benzema

found the equalizer just two minutes later when

Mbappe

plays a pass into Benzema, who did a magical first touch before lifting the ball past

Sommer

.

Benzema and France turned things completely around in a matter of minutes.

Karim

Benzema

nodded in on the goal line from an

Antoine Griezmann

rebound.

Paul Pogba

scored the third goal with a fantastic curling effort into the top right corner from outside the box to double the lead for Les Blues.

However, that was not the end of the story as

Seferovic

completed his brace with another header before

Mario Gavranovic

came off the bench to score and send the game to extra time.

The Swiss held on until Mbappe's poor penalty in the penalty shootout gave them the victory.

Switzerland

will take on

Spain

in the quarter-finals, who defeated

Croatia

5-3 in extra time earlier in the day.
